The FIA and Stewards should be loathe to change a result from the order in which the drivers cross the line, but it's got to the point whereby the position you cross the line in is just the START of the process.

Sod Ferrari bias, or an agenda against McLaren and Hamilton, just take a look at Trulli ...

Saturday
Qualifies in 6th.
Get's thrown out for having a flappy wing.
Toyota show that can change that, so he's allowed to start from the pits.

Sunday
Crosses the line 3rd, and takes the trophy for that.
Dropped to 12th by the stewards.

Monday
Toyota confirm they will appeal, so his race isn't run yet.

Wednesday
Surely it's over as Toyota withdraw their appeal

Thursday
He's catapulted back up to 3rd.

.... and that's not it as Toyota are one of the 3 teams to use the diffuser which the FIA will only decide upon after the Malaysia race, so he may not, even now, end up with 3rd.

Why did I waste my f***ing time last weekend watching qualifying and the race/ What a f***ing shambles! I won't be doing it again, it's a complete farce.

So the FIA (Ferrari International assistance) have struck again. I bet my botom dollar that if this was a Ferarri the punishment would be nowhere near as severe. People on this thread saying its easy to blame Ferarri all the time, but i genuinley feel the FIA Have an issue with Mclaren. Remember when lewis hamilton was disqualified in belgum last year for an overtaking incedent where he made a ferari run slightly wide, and a few races befor kimi raikonnen Smashed into the back of Adrain Sutil at monaco coz he was driving very dangerously. Did he get punished? Of corse not!

If I were Lewis id give up and go and race in Indy 500 or something.

They could have just stripped him of 3rd place

The probably reason Hamilton was disqualified rather than dropped back to fourth is that if the diffuser appeal is successful and Brawn and Toyota disqualified that would put Hamilton in first place and 10pts ahead of Ferrari.

Makes you think.

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was disqualified from the Australian Formula One Grand Prix on Thursday for giving misleading evidence to race stewards.

The McLaren driver was awarded third place after the season-opening GP when stewards ruled Toyota's Jarno Trulli breached regulations by passing Hamilton during a safety car period in Melbourne on Sunday.

Trulli was reinstated to his original third-place finish Thursday, while Hamilton and McLaren were excluded from the results and receive no points.

A new hearing into the matter, convened by motor sport world governing body FIA, interviewed both drivers and teams, and heard new evidence which included radio transmissions between teams and drivers in Melbourne, as well as technical data from the race.

After deliberating for several hours, FIA released a statement which said Hamilton and McLaren "acted in a manner prejudicial to the conduct of the event by providing evidence deliberately misleading to the stewards."

"We're disappointed by what's happened, but in the circumstances we aren't going to appeal," McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said.

"I believe it was a harsh decision. Experience has told us you've got to accept these decisions," he said. "These things come along, and you have to build on your concentration for this weekend and the races to come."

In the safety car period, brought about by a late crash, Trulli was in third place when he briefly ran off the track. While passing is prohibited during safety car periods, a driver can move up if a car ahead goes off the circuit.

McLaren, having not seen Trulli run off, were told over the radio by Hamilton that he had the Toyota driver. The team tried to get clarification from race control about whether Hamilton could remain in third. When that clarification was not forthcoming, McLaren told Hamilton to give back third place, which he did.

Post-race, the stewards — without the benefit of McLaren's radio communication — ruled that Trulli should not have taken back the third spot, and penalized him 25 seconds, dropping him from third to 12th.

McLaren claimed Thursday they thought race authorities already knew the content of the radio transmission, which can be heard during the race.

Whitmarsh denied that the stewards' ruling amounted to an allegation that McLaren and Hamilton lied to the Melbourne hearing, saying only that the team erred by not being more forthcoming about the radio communication between team and driver.

"There's no indication that Lewis lied," Whitmarsh said.

"There was no lie within that hearing. We the team made a mistake, that we didn't supply a full account of a radio conversation we believe was being listened to in any case and we don't believe was material to the decision being made by the stewards."

Trulli's reinstatement to third now gives him six championship points and puts Toyota second in the constructors' championship with 11 points, after teammate Timo Glock finished fourth in Melbourne.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Hamilton was 4th and had a nailed-on 5 points. Why would you lie about 3rd place AFTER Trulli had already appeared on the podium, given the interviews and taken the plaudits? It would appear they have risked much for 1 extra point and ended up losing 5 points.

From a neutral point of view I feel short-changed. Hamilton's drive from 18th to 4th was superb, but ultimately pointless.

Its because hes black innit.

f***ing is always Hamilton getting the shit.

I'm split over this. Clearly McClaren witheld the contents of their communications with Hamilton (that he should let Trulli overtake). However its only because of threat of punishment that they had to do this in the first place. If the race stewards actually bothered to do their job during the race, they could have told McClaren whether or not Hamilton could have kept the place and there wouldn't have been any of this fuss.

Worthing
It sounds like they were a bit naughty but how come it has taken so long to make the decision?

They couldn't have him back to 4th because if they throw out the results of the teams who drove with this controversial diffuser, then Hamilton would have ended up winning it.

Instead, if the diffuser cars are thrown out, Alonso will be made the winner, which is far more acceptable to them.

As was his drive when they gave the race to Massa last season. They obviously don't realise up in their Ivory Towers that the average F1 fans think that stewards are just a clutch of COCKS and the argument that McLaren and Hamilton suffer most looks even more of an FIA and stewards agenda as we get more and more of these shady decisions

McLaren were at fault as they lied to the stewards, for once i agree with the Stewards o this:

During the hearing, held approximately one hour after the end of the race, the Stewards and the Race Director questioned Lewis Hamilton and his Team Manager David Ryan specifically about whether there had been an instruction given to Hamilton to allow Trulli to overtake. Both the driver and the Team Manager stated that no such instruction had been given. The Race Director specifically asked Hamilton whether he had consciously allowed Trulli to overtake. Hamilton insisted that he had not done so.

b. Furthermore, the radio exchanges between the driver and the Team contain two explicit orders from the Team to let the Toyota pass.

And the Stewards had access to these all along didn't they?
Stewards f***ed up by not being diligent enough in their jobs imo and are now trying to pass the buck. There is no excuse for this being dragged out 4 days after the event.

still no reason why Hamilton should get away with it, they did wrong and should be punished...simple!

I can't agree with the stewards if what you say is right, McClaren had asked repeatedly during the yellow flag period whether they should let Trulli pass or not and received no reply, and after Hamilton has been penalised in the past for his overtaking of a Ferrari when apparently he shouldn't have (took a short cut overtaking him, gave the place back then overtook again but was still penalised) why should he stay in third even if he was entitled to keep the place due to Trulli's error if the authorities keep changing their own rules to suit them, risking yet another penalty.

If Hamilton had not allowed Trulli back past him under the yellows, whats the betting that Hamilton would have been disqualified for undertaking under yellows anyway.

I think that this has far more to do with trying to keep the championship close during a season rather than Ferrari bias, the penalties McClaren have received in the last few seasons have meant that the title went to the wire, (generating the governing body extra cash) and maybe they were worried that Hamilton picking up points would mean he would end up as a clear winner come the end of the season.

The problem is that with the recent examples of steward decisions varying from race to race (and team to team) those who participate don't really know where they stand anymore and what is legal and what isn't anymore. (McClaren should have known whether under the rules if they had to give the place back or not, but the recent stewarding decisions have meant that they don't really know where they stand) This is what is damaging the sport as a
spectacle and could endanger its popularity.

I think you will find that a president has been set in this case with Ferrari a few seasons back when an illegal part was found but previous results still stood

I missed it, what has he actually done wrong?? He drove a perfect race and whather he was economical with the truth in discussions after the race have f*** all to do with the race that had gone on before....imo. The stewards had all the information at their disposal but chose to make do with asking a few questions??? Bit lazy that isn't it? Maybe they were too busy quaffing champagne in hospitality and couldn't be arsed to do their jobs on the day.
