Adkins has done a very good job, but his squad last season was better than ours, his wage bill at £11 million was twice that of the Albion's, and he has spent well on the likes of Sharp (£2 million) and Cork (£750k and £23,000 a week), amongst others.
People forget that we lost our leading striker (Murray) and best player (Bennett) from last season, so although we have spent big on CMS and Buckley the improvement to the squad has been marginal.
If Saints had sold equivalent players in Lambert and Lallana they would not, I suspect, be where they are today. However fair play to them for what they have achieved this season.
This year was supposed to be a transitional year as we got used to football at a higher level: I would have settled for mid-table, let alone top half if asked back in August, and so I imagine would most Seagulls fans.
The trouble is that too many football fans are fickle. Gus has done a good job with a limited budget, hence all the loan players. He's got us to within a stone's throw of the play-offs. The fact that we didn't quite make it could be down to the fact that we haven't got the experience of teams like Middlesborough, Cardiff, Blackpool, Reading or West Ham.
So why is he being accused of throwing away a playoff spot when it was never really ours in the first place?
Perhaps some people on this board need to take a reality check.

This.

Other than the qualification that Murray was no Lambert - you have posted the financial reality. We have over-performed and Gus and the team should be given all due credit for that.
Any point in telling kevetherev that - or is he too blind and ignorant for that?
I've tried - and he's not listening. He's only believing his own selective memory.
And another thing. Has Gus got a problem maintaining momentum towards season end? Very poor end to last season with those two home defeats and failing to reach the 100 points mark. And same thing happening this season.
apart from maybe Calderon(no fee involved), name me one player Poyet has signed who you could honestly say was value for money and was a bargain
Just watch your f***ing insults..I never insult anyone who doesn't insult me first..Calling someone ignorant or whatever just because they dont agree with you,,shows what a self centred tosser you really are,,with your 40 thousand posts.

Vicente?

Whatever....I have more or less said let agree to disagree, which is what having an opinion is all about. But it would appear you would back Poyet to the hilt. You maybe right, you maybe wrong, time will tell....I still say he will walk and IF he does and uses the fans as one of the reasons,,,,then god help him wherever he goes next. This club was here a long time before Poyet arrived and will be here a long time after he has gone. What's been good for Brighton, has been good for Poyet, he would do well to remember that now and then, instead of thinking it's all about himself. Brighton and Hove Albion and Tony Bloom gave Poyet the platform to do what he has and his first break in management. In return he slags the fans off, never praises them and constantly whinges about the budget, despite having more than any manager since Mullery....and quite frankly apart from maybe Calderon(no fee involved), name me one player Poyet has signed who you could honestly say was value for money and was a bargain....Like I say, in the greater scheme of things he has achieved very little so far in management. The jury is out,on many issues....Tactics/Squad Harmony/ Discipline/ Respect / Transfers.....oh the more I think about it, the list is endless.
I do not necessarily agree with everything that the Rev has said during this 'discussion' but nevertheless,he has made some valid points that quite a few posters on other similar threads agree with. You can't agree to disagree when there is absolutely nobody on here that supports you. Why should anybody agree to disagree with you when they find your points misguided and damaging. Having read the thread I sense that you are just being stubborn.
goldstone - are you being serious ? We didn't maintain momentum last year as we had won the Title and were in celebration mode. That is good management. The players achieved the maximum expected and were allowed to enjoy the moment.
Bulgarian international Radostin Kishishev
Spanish international Vicente.
Will Buckley - One of most exciting youngsters
Gordon Greer - 250k
Ashley Barnes - 2nd top scorer in League One championship winning season. Top scorer this year.
Sandaza was a free transfer who grabbed a few VERY important goals on our way to promotion
but yeah, you're right. It's not like any of those players are bargains....

I am sure everyone wants Gus to succeed, but I do believe he has been 'bigged up' a tad too much and hence when things have gone awry, the two sides of opinion tend to polarise and views become deeply entrenched and bad tempered.
From my own point of view,he is still very much a work in progress as a manager and at this stage of his career has it all to prove.I am not entirely convinced by him.I hope I am wrong;as always time will tell.
