Never really got that argument to be honest. I presume it is mostly based on visits to Royal residences ?

More people visit Versailles every year than Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle combined. A lot more.

The potteries alone have made millions of pounds with the Royal wedding and Jubilee celebratory editions.

Does anyone else find it a bit odd that their are 100's of people celebrating up The Mall waving flags for their queen, there are some of the world best pop starts singing some of the worlds most famous songs for her........ and she turns up late and sits their looking glum like someone has stolen her crown?

IMHO it is time for her to retire and let Will and Kate have a go at it, at least they might look like they are enjoying themselves.

Maybe she'd been on the phone to her husband of 65 years to ask how he was, and was a bit upset that he wasn't well enough to be with her?

I would much prefer the Royal Family owned to sea bed then the Government. If the Government owned it, there would be a good chance Labour would have sold it off to a foreigner who would then build the wind farm on it.

And for another argument for the monarchy: They bring communities together. Look at the amount of street parties that have taken place in the last two years from the Royal wedding and the diamond jubilee. Those street parties wouldn't have happened without the Royal Family being here and those neighbours would carry on not knowing their neighbours very well.

Your point on Hi-Viz jackets is an interesting apart from i think seeing one guy wearing one (and he was on a Thames rescue launch) i did not see any others and i really do think someone at Buck house or Hm Govt told those Health & Safety guys there will only be three colours on show red, white and blue.

Yeah it really was a great day for many people, Queen and her court had a great time drinking fine Champagne and eating the best food. But some didn't have that experience.

Yes probably because it was out of character for her, she is normally so cheerful.

I generally dislike a week of government talk in May of fighting inequality in the UK full of statistics of those high percentages of judges and journalists and politicians "educated" at Eton and its like, followed by another week of praising and adoring a woman born into grotesque wealth and handed a crown for being the next in line who is the symbol of unequal opportunity. It doesn't fit together for me to be an exhibition of fairness, so i'd rather their income was lessened, they got thrown into society for a spell to rid themselves of an inherited and unjustified aloofness and they stopped ruining Christmas Day with their meaningless TV chatter.

No, you don't see any connection really!!!

Nope, Government need to look at their Work force program and regulate private security firms better. As Thunder Bolt says, different argument, different thread.

I've worked for people from some very well known private schools as well as other institutions and bodies and heard things that would make steam come out your ears. Trust me the upper class is alive and very well and as obscene as ever, interwoven and legitimised by the Royal family.

if the security for my party had to sleep on the streets under a bridge I would take some responsibility for it. Especially if some of the worldwide television broadcast for my party was banging on about all the good I have done for poor unfortunate people around the world.

You cannot spot the Irony of this situation? Good boy David and Lizzy will be very proud of you.

Perhaps she wasn't enjoying it very much. Perhaps she does not like the music that was being played and had to sit there for hours listening it. She looked very happy at the Thames Pageant and at Epsom because she was doing things that she enjoys. And Prince Charles will be the next king, not Prince William.

Patronising, nice. I really don't care too much about the rights and wrongs of this weekend, I've quite enjoyed it, others haven't. But to tarnish the whole thing on the word of a couple of dole cheats, who don't even want to be named, seems a tad desperate.

The only thing that has really annoyed me is the Republicans claiming that the weekend protest was an unbelievable success after a whole 1000 people turned up.

I was simply responding to the absolute NONSENSE that the royals bring in millions. If they're such a great pull, surely all us Brits would want to be in the country for such a monumental occasion?

The reasons I find the royal family so distasteful are long. I find the whole pomp and outright wealth that's been handed down for centuries out of date in modern Britain. I also find the fact that the Royal Family own the SEABED a disgrace - meaning we pay them rent for the pier for example. Ridiculous. A couple of things that I know about (and I don't spend time looking into this):

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-offshore-windfarm-windfall--owns-seabed.html

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...-sold-Sunninghill-to-his-Kazakh-friends.html#

Any genius revelations that you can share that can change my mind? I'm all ears

Most people on this thread think you are wrong?

Oh, sorry, you asked for genius revelations.

You see I'm willing to see that whilst not perfect, the Queen has an unelected Head of State has done a grand job, well at least what you would expect a Head of State to do.

But there has to a be a better reason for the continued status quo, beyond a small sample poll conducted by the Tourist Industry and the shipping of some plates.

I'm sure their existence brings a net gain, but so does Alan Sugar.

You might as well privatise her.

Blown the theory that the Royal family aren't held in very high regard these day's right out of the water. People can still slag them off and say they cost us millions(which is simply not true, they bring in millions) but after the last few days, their argument looks pretty stupid tbh.

Do you have any data to support this? Whenever I talk about the monarchy with anyone, this point always comes up and I must say I don't buy it. I'm open-minded to the idea it might be true, but surely it is completely unmeasurable? Republics around the world have great tourism industries and trade links without the need for a royal family (France & Germany being obvious examples) - surely the history and culture of Britain itself attracts people rather than the fact that it has a queen which will not even remotely affect your visit to the country.

Edit - I see from reading the other pages this point was discussed at length!
