Great scenes from The Mall

Are you aware of quite how much money the royal family directly and voluntarily pay into UK PLC each and every year?

Beyond that, their worth to this nation, in terms of the £££s that tourists spend here because they are here is massive.

I can see it irks you though - have you considered upping sticks and living somewhere else far away? Australia maybe?

Can't go there, she owns that seabed as well...

To be honest I'd rather the Royals had it, there are all sorts of arguments about how much value they have to the country but you can be sure that they bring in a fair lump.

The liars from the commons though contribute absolutely nothing and if they were handed £38m from an electric supplier they'd probably spend it on deciding what colour lamp shades to buy.

This kind of response I respect. The truth is, no one can be sure if they bring in more than they spend. My initial comments were a counter-balance to the bland "they bring in millions, God Bless 'em" argument. I don't think anyone can know for sure. My issue with the royals is far more than that.

I would trust the parliament to spend that money more than I would the Royals. At least parliament might try to spend it on the people, you know 100% the Royals won't.

Ahm.... The money goes to pay for the upkeep of crown estates, i.e houses and property own by the crown, (not to be confused with the monarch/head of state and their families) which is separate corporation in charge of the assets belonging to the crown, not privately owned property which is owned by the Windsors. Any money that is remaining goes to HM revenues and custom i.e the taxman.

Maybe do some research next time before throwing out some bizarre claims?!?

There's nothing bizarre in my claims. It's widely reported. Under measures announced by George Osborne in 2010, the Royals get 15% of the profits from the Crown Estate’s property. It's been estimated that profits from off-shore windfarms will be £250m by 2020, hence £37.5m for the Royals (not the Crown Estate).

What does your research say about that?

Some other people have responded with intelligent rebuttals. You act like a 5 year old. My point is quite clearly, why should they own the sea bed?

Because 'The Crown' whom is the highest power in the country own all the land that embodies 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' which includes all the territorial waters that surround the country. All the land, will as long as we are a constitutional monarchy, will be owned by 'The Crown'. 'The Crown is the only person who can own it. If not 'The Crown', it will be owned by another country and we'll have no territorial waters.

The royals bring in millions each year as a major tourist attraction. Without them we would loose millions of pounds worth of inflows, mainly from Asia and the US.

So does Mickey Mouse in America but he can't do these things as well:

Domestic Affairs

The appointment and dismissal of ministers;

The summoning, prorogation and dissolution of Parliament;

Royal assent to bills;

The appointment and regulation of the civil service;

The commissioning of officers in the armed forces;

Directing the disposition of the armed forces in the UK;

Appointment of Queen's Counsel;

Issue and withdrawal of passports;

Prerogative of mercy. (Used to apply in capital punishment cases. Still used, eg to remedy errors in sentence calculation)

Granting honours;

Creation of corporations by Charter;

Foreign Affairs

The making of treaties;

Declaration of war;

Deployment of armed forces overseas;

Recognition of foreign states;

Accreditation and reception of diplomats.

If its all about tourism send them to Madame Tussauds

And that's one (of many) reasons why I'm a republican. The Crown shouldn't be the highest power in the country.

Never really got that argument to be honest. I presume it is mostly based on visits to Royal residences ?

More people visit Versailles every year than Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle combined. A lot more.

That's your argument? Seriously? Can you leave this thread while I talk to people who have something to back up their arguments like Timbo and Newman-seagulls?

What does your research say about that?

Revenues and Customs get 85% of the profits (£212.5m), if there was no Royal Family then income from all properties and estates would stand at a far lower number than they currently are. Sure the cost of wind farms would be cheaper and the government would get 100% of the profits, but the amount of money from every crown estate would far lower?

This only applies if they were wiped from history and suddenly had never existed.

How would that help, She is queen of Australia too!

I'm no great royalist but these scenes make me proud to have been born on this island. No country on earth can do pagentry like the Brits.

All so good natured, ordered, happy and impressive. Even the OB look brilliant by their lack of fluro yelo jackets!

God Bless You Ma'am.

Your point on Hi-Viz jackets is an interesting apart from i think seeing one guy wearing one (and he was on a Thames rescue launch) i did not see any others and i really do think someone at Buck house or Hm Govt told those Health & Safety guys there will only be three colours on show red,white and blue.

I don't see how anyone can know that? That's guess work. Let's not forget that if we were to become a republic tomorrow, all the current properties & estates would still be there and would still have the history that apparently all these tourists flock to see. The Tower of London, for example, is a tourist attraction even though no one gets their heads cut off there any more!

Anyway, I always enjoy these republican/monarch debates. We'll never alter each others opinions, but at least we can discuss it sensibly. Time for bed for me - I've been out of the country for the past few days and I'm tired :)

Does anyone else find it a bit odd that their are 100's of people celebrating up The Mall waving flags for their queen, there are some of the world best pop starts singing some of the worlds most famous songs for her........ and she turns up late and sits their looking glum like someone has stolen her crown?

IMHO it is time for her to retire and let Will and Kate have a go at it, at least they might look like they are enjoying themselves.
