Now I've discovered he's primarily a LB I'm starting to wonder a bit about the money being spent when Estupinan and Barco are here? RB always felt like a bigger need, although I guess Veltman/Lamptey/Hinsh is bigger numbers even if we don't have a world beater there.

Bottom line is ferdi can play both positions so his flexibility will be invaluable.

He has played all positions except Goalkeeper, central defence and striker.

In fact it's only really since 2023/24 that he played more as a left back than a right back.

So we'd have :

Estupinan - left back
Veltman - right back
Kadıoğlu - left or right back
Hinshelwood - right or left back

Barco - loan to be ready for the squad next season.

Also it gives Veltman more freedom to be back up in central defence and Hinshelwood more availability for midfield if needed.

Like it. I really hope we get this signing done.

Barco should stay, and if we have two fit left backs, rotate them a bit. Ferdi to play right back, usually. I would rather see Hinshelwood go on loan to someone that needs a midfielder, than see Barco go.

I genuinely believe he’ll be one of the first on the team sheet. The coach will squeeze him in anywhere. He seems that sort of player. He’ll surely be playing left back for us until Estupiñán returns. Then - right back. But I’m sure we’ll see him on the wing and in midfield.

Just imagine how useful he’d have been last season when we ran out of wingers and full backs?

Looking at those stats, it’d be no surprise if he becomes our 1st choice attacking midfielder too!

I think this could all be one BIG Red Herring.

We'll probably sign a right back none of us had considered next week!
Nah, I think Brajan Grouper will drop a bit deeper.

That's on the thread for about the 63rd time. The thing that it doesn't really show is where has he played best, what is his best position. So for example, Hinsh has played left back for us at Goodison, nobody would suggest that's his best position, there are all sorts of reasons why a player might be moved around the pitch, injuries, odd tactics etc

We're signing him for massive money, so what we should be thinking is where can he play the best? I wonder when we've spoken to him what position we've told him we're signing him for. I guess we haven't said we're signing him as a utility player

Judging from his appearances for Turkey, it seems his best position is left back. OK great. I have to say I can't think of any left footed right backs, (or right footed left backs) who have preferred that side. I can name plenty who have done ok filling in, but there's usually lots of tell tale signs that they are in a clunky position for them, the speed at which they release the ball being the biggest one

If, as some have been suggesting, Kadioglu is being signed as first choice left back and not as a right back, then to be honest I'm not massively fussed about the signing. Would much rather we signed someone we felt was a natural right back, and then played Barco/Estupinan at left back.

He's right-footed although he can use both well.

No, it doesn't, but you can infer a lot from the numbers of appearances. He's very unlikely to have racked up 37 games at right-back if he's a terrible right-back (and by the same token, I'd be surprised if Hinshelwood ends up playing more than 30 times at left-back in his professional career).

Pervis Estupinan is the first choice left back. In form, he is one of the five best left backs in the league.

In The Athletic roundup this morning they say Man United are not pursuing Ferdi despite stories in the Turkish press

Of course not terrible.

A better example might have been Adingra. Prefers the left, but someone ahead of him, so has largely been shunted somewhere else due to circumstance. Now Simon clearly isn't terrible on the right. His appearance record suggests he's a good right winger, whereas, what he probably is a very good left winger

I haven't got time to trawl (no pun intended) through the previous posts on this thread, but I'm sure I've seen an English speaking interview with him where he stated his preferred position was right-back.

*See post 1767. I've found the video and I have clipped it to just 30 seconds, where Ferdi explains what his favourite position is.
