[Albion] Everton and anti football

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
Isn’t the time that is wasted by a team just added on in the additional time?that would be the idea of it I thought. All the slow delaying tatics just means an extension surely
With that in mind it’s comical to see a player trying to waste time these days
That would end up with 15 minutes added time in each half.

Just far enough away from LDC
We were really despised for a Molyneux game, was it in 2019?
We had got into the top 10 playing counter attacking, solid defending football. As someone else said telhe threee one nil wins were poor performances. Someone phoned up 606 and said he should be sacked.

Then Hughton came under pressure to be more expensive. Results tumbled and we had the defeats to Bournemouth and Cardiff in quick succession. Hughton then reverted to plan a to get us over the line to safety with draws against wolves, Newcastle and arsenal.

I remember walking out of molyneux after the game and a few young wolves fans were moaning about how we played. An older wolves fan responded back with comments to the effect of (paraphrasing) 'i went to the Amex with wolves needing to stay up and we were so directors and showed no fight. Don't criticise brighton for doing what they needed'

Some good points on this thread, and also some lazy nonsense. Like most, I hate the time-wasting that goes on. The extra injury time was meant to stop that, but one of the main reasons teams do it is to stop momentum. I would suggest the Premier League allows physios to come on the pitch while the game is going on to put a stop to some of that. But I don't think there's a solution that's 100%.

However, all this "I wouldn't want to watch Everton every week" is rubbish. Firstly, the week before they won 3-2... sounded like a really good game. Secondly, I thought in the first half they actually played some decent stuff in patches - far better than Dycheball. And finally, despite us having all the ball in the second half, I wonder which set of fans went home happier? If I had travelled all the way to Everton and we had won 1-0 with a backs-to-the-wall performance like that I'd be buzzing.

Hmmm

yeah they were pathetic with the constant going down and rolling around in agony

yeah there was the constant time wasting by Pickford (how can he be so outraged at getting a yellow, the tit) and the two centre backs

but I thought they defended well….were good on the press for the first half (not so the second)

and we just didn’t create much ….thats our responsibility
Yep, they defended well.

Which is what we should have got in second half on Saturday.
.....15 more mins without a shot on goal..... we needed to change the tactic againts the land of the gaints at te back - "over the top early" disipline from pedo not to drop deep wide men to stay wide - get the first goal and we can playthe way we wanted

Yep, agree. If I were an Everton fan at the moment I' be loving watching them every week. It's been a grim few years both on and off the pitch and they seem to be scraping together some momentum and, more importantly, wins with Moyes. Watching your team is fun, and I expect they don't mind the gamesmanship, tactical fouls, physio treatments and Jordan Pickford if it gets them wins.

I suspect Newcastle fans would have been well within their rights to be saying "I wouldn't want to watch Brighton every week" too after our win up there. A grim attritional away performance does the job sometimes.

I can only say I was so disappointed with Saturday's match. Disappointed with Albion yet again failing to beat a very poor team below them in the table. Disappointed with FH and his team selection. The bench was far stronger than the starting eleven.
However, the biggest disappointment was with the tactics of Everton. So Moyes was ecstatic with his team and the result. He should be ashamed of their anti football. The biggest culprit was Pickford with his stupid time wasting tactics. Other players constantly feigning injury and running the clock down. What is up with our refs? There should be more bookings and even red cards for blatant time wasting. We need the Prem/FA to endorse this. We pay good money for our tickets. It is disgraceful that fans are treated to such shoddy playacting and cheating.
Rant over!
There's a fair enough point here about the epidemic levels of play acting to slow a game down.

A football fan now is someone who spends huge proportions of their disposable income watching grown men pretend to be hurt. Ref's should be much less cautious. Only stop for head injuries and if VAR shows clearly no head contact, a red card and a very long ban should await to cheat involved.

I also believe had we scored in the 1st minute, Everton would have used the same tactics till about the 85th minute and hoped to nick something

That's the best Everton can hope for. A completely skanked smash and grab. That's as good as they can get

We can hope to go to good teams, have a go and smash them. There's no need for any jealousy on that result

Who remembers that game at Wolves where we put 11 men behind the ball for a 0-0 under Hughton in possibly the dullest Premier league game ever?
Absolute defensive masterclass!

It's boring and anti football but they left the amex with all 3 points. The ref was poor and never had a grip on the game and allowed them to keep on wasting time. Even under CH, I don't ever recall us being that dull.

What got me was the physios ambling on, then, sitting down as if they're setting up a picnic and having an "injury assessment" which entails talking as slowly as possible before even doing anything. Then the player stands up, has a drink, a little look at the scoreboard and hobbles off as slowly as possible, all for a kick on the shinpad.
Meanwhile the rest of the team regather, have a drink etc. it's getting like basketball and it's shit.
And, no, I don't have the answer unless they implement some kind of vertical airlift to remove them from the field of play.

We have done it, in the past.

Which season was it that refs started adding 10 plus minutes of injury time both halves? I think it was after a World Cup, maybe even the last one.
I, personally liked that, but it was soon dropped after whinging from managers and players about extended playing time leading to more injuries.

My answer would have been, “don’t waste time then”.

Also, it has been further sanitised by the pundits, journos, etc, calling it’Game management’
It’s not, it’s cheating, just because everyone does it at one time or another, doesn’t make it not cheating.

As has been said, it's not so much the time being used as the breaking of momentum.
I still feel that our 'game management' v Liverpool away was poor in this respect.
We were ahead but they were building a head of steam. Precisely the time for the continued substitutions and falling over holding the head....just to spoil the flow.
I honestly believe we'd have won that game with some dark stuff.

For every 9 goal thriller in the "best league in the world", there is absolute jobby like the game on Saturday. I don't know how you fix it, but it certainly is not good for the sport. Imagine a neutral tuning in by mistake - they wouldn't do it twice.

Exactly no one remembers 28 shots on target and losing 1-0 we remember the 3 points from Newcastle though.

Did the ref stop the game for the injury to DCL? It wasn’t a head injury and clearly nothing broken. We had good possession and momentum at that point. He was down for about 3 minutes and once back up Beto was ready, their players had all had a drink and a nice chat. We never really got that momentum back again.
In answer to my own question - no the ref didn’t stop it - our own captain did. We are far too nice, especially at home.
