Nobody likes terrorism, its shit, but...it isnt carried out for no reason.

oh it f***ing is. recently we have had 4 saps blow themselves up because aw diddums they didnt really know who they were. we have had countless people in NI join paramilitaries because they were bored and wanted to be a big man. i would say a f***ing hell of a lot of it is due to f***ing hormones not getting shagged enough and sheer evil. not principles.

If there is/are more than one celebration taking place why should a Local Authority not recognise that ?

I take your point about recognising some and not others but is that really the case and why should Jews, Muslims and anyone else that celebrate festivals at the same time as Christmas (which borrows from Jewish and Pagan festivals anyway) and are also tax payers not be recognised?

That was the point (keep up at the back!) - they recognised everything but managed to relegate Christmas Day to a "Public Holiday". They should recognise as many as possible, but not sure that "Our Day of the Lord Vader" is going to appear on a calendar soon!

Anyway - what is religious about Boxing Day? Anyone?

Out of interest can anyone tell me of any Islamist attacks in this country before the invasion of Iraq?

I can think of around 3500 deaths caused by "Christian" violence in this country during my lifetime but other than post-2001 I can't remember any Muslim attacks.

Last Christmas I brought 4 bottles of Scotch, 3 vodka, 2 brandy, 18 red wine, 12 white wine and 3 polipins of Dark star hophead....................

I swear if it wasn`t for the kids we wouldn`t bother would we ?

Correct, however my born again Christian relatives keep trying to get me to join 'Keep Christ in Christmas' on Facebook. Clearly it bothers them even if our Prague correspondent doesn't mind.

Boxing Day is St Stephen's Day.

Although why a Protestant country recognises Saint's days I'm not sure.

its nothing to do with religions.

Of course it is, the origins of a celebration at this time of year are firstly pagan religious rites, then latterly Christian,...... as suggested earlier by several contributors, you wouldn't replace Ramadam, Divahli or Yom Kippur with some generic 'holiday' label,... they are what they are, historic, traditional celebrations of their faith.

Christmas is just the same, though the move to a more secular WEST has diluted it somewhat.... it should not however be an excuse to devalue it in the face of several billion Christians who are keen to see it preserved.... or do their opinions not count.?

Think its more from the retail point of view myself. Retailers want your money.

Which churches do these millions of Christians attend, as apart from weddings, and funerals, the churches ive been in have been, to be generous, the attendees have been a bit on the sparse side.

Actually they were here first. It was Henry the VIII who decided that being a Catholic was a bit limiting. Of course you mustn't say that in case you upset any minorities.

Watch Songs of Praise then mate.............. they have the same arguements in the churches in the lead up to the televised services as we do on here when we draw Spurs or someone.

Probably pedantic but Henry Viii was a Catholic in his religion except for accepting the authority of the Bishop of Rome. Henry persecuted, tortured and murdered genuine Protestants and resisted translating the Bible into English. Mind you let's not upset Anne Widdicombe...

Yes, the retail rush is a by product of our societies needs, they have exploited opportunity. Mecca is a mass of free marketeers, all cashing in on the feeding frenzy, see not exclusive to this neck of the woods.

Your second point, I do understand what you are saying, it is less of an important institution in OUR lives here in the UK than what is was,... but why?.. is it perhaps because the last two generations have seen Christianity marginalised, and with it 'christian values' by which this country has always strived to live by, and that includes tolerance and cohabitation with all other religions within our society.

Please don't now go and google for examples of intolerance, shit happens throughout history,... its a general view I am proffering.

I wont google.. :)

To be honest, I think religion..ALL religion, is a load of codswallop.l..

I believe, along with my, yes, Muslim girlfriend, that if there IS a god, then theres one god, and people seem to be going to war with each other over the way they pray to the one god.
Its ridiculous and has wasted over the centuries, millions, upon millions of lives, and doesnt look like the stupidness of it, will end any time soon.
Christians in UK... come on.. people say they are christians, but what percent actually go to church, are involved in their churches activities etc.
Its all top show, and that goes for all the religions.
