I suspect that one of the reasons Collingwood has been recalled is a nagging doubt the selectors have with Vaughan's form.

Collingwood could easily take over the captaincy if required, but if he's not in the side there is no other decent option. Strauss had a complete loss of form and is risky, Freddy had a nightmare against the Aussies and already has enough to cope with, Pietersen is our best bat and could do without the pressure. Bell is too quiet and Cook still too young.

On that last point, I believe that Cook could be the next England captain, maybe after the next Ashes series.

Cook seems the obvious long term replacement, but i think it's a bit too soon. Strauss always did well as a captain, and from memory he seemed to bat a lot better when captain

I can see Vaughan having a decent series against the Aussies because he'll be motivated to win back the Ashes England lost without him Down Under, he'll know it's probably his last Ashes series and, at a stretch, he might also have a shot at equalling the record number of test centuries thus establishing his place in English Test history as one of the best.

The Aussies would relish putting Strauss, Pietersen or Collingwood under intense pressure and I'm not sure they'd cope.

Vaughan is not worth his place as a batsman,as I suspect most will agree, but at least he has time to prepare his "we were second all over the pitch" speech, which always goes down well.

Now for a strategic injury before the next test.

Bell once again proving pretty much the only player worth anything... And to think I really didn't rate him a year ago... He's certainly proved me WRONG.
