Agree on Anouk. Doesn't she teach music now in America?

Yep you're right about K's Choice but I thought I could sneaky extend the definition to Dutch language bands. I got caught out!

I have probably heard some of those 'local' stars you've named. I've been in bars in Amsterdam before with beautiful young Dutch people and the resident DJ was playing what can best be described as oom-pah music to a Eurotrash beat. We thought everyone was being terribly ironic. After a whole night of this stuff we realised everyone really was singing along quite appreciatively. I was v surprised how bad the music was. Sort of Eurovision bad.

Singing along in Amsterdam bars? It was probably Johnny Jordaan.

That is not a recommendation by the way.

Although the beer named after him ('Johnny') made by local brewers De Prael is...

Just to broaden out the genre's here, Death Metal band Pestilence hail from Enschede, formed in 1986, split up in 1994, reformed in 2008.

Any decent up and coming acts you'd recommend then, Trufflehound?

Currently, a lot of the new European music I'm buying is mainly Scandinavian or Icelandic with the dance music coming predominantly from German and Polish acts. I've got a few albums by Belgian bands too but can't remember their names off the top of my head. There's some good stuff from Hungary, Lithuania and Finland too.

'Recommend' is a far too strong a term to be used with most Dutch bands I know... My album collection numbers well into 4 figures, but there is good reason why there are probably fewer than half a dozen by Dutch artists (and most of them are by my mates, so I was obliged to buy them).

The Fahrenheit Twins are OK, so are the Gotcha! Allstars in a strange P-Funk sort of way. And I really liked ska revivalists J-Stars when they supported The Selecter a year or two ago, but that may have been the beer.

The problem Dutch bands have is that to non-native speakers, the Dutch language, which grates a bit even when spoken, sounds utterly shit when sung. To this day I can't think of a single decent song sung in Dutch. All bands who want to get anywhere have to sing in English, and that makes them sound a bit derivative by default.

And as stated above, by and large they have pretty conservative musical tastes anyway. Lest we forget, Radar Love still gets as much airplay over here as Hotel California does on American FM radio...

Good call for Earth & Fire NMH, another of theirs i bought but lost in a divorce was Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight. Moving into the 80's there was another group i liked so much ive forgotten their name, they did My Funny Valentine, the group had an 'X' in it. Trufflehound will help me here i think...

Cheers Trufflehound. I'll check out the Fahrenheit Twins.

By the way - Junior Senior are Danish, whoever mentioned them earlier.
