I don’t know if it is possible to change the US constitution, but if it is, Tramp could change it to abolish the two terms only for any
one person to hold the office of POTUS. Now there’s a thought…

He has already muted this which we know is the first step to trying to implement it

It does bring Obama into play, if he wants it.

Well exactly 👍, but we know that Trump is nothing if inconsistent.

I suspect you are right and he will keep Musk at arms length to a degree, so he can disown him if there's enough of a serious backlash against the machinations.
I need to stop worriting about this stuff...but it's all bl**dy concerning.
The thing is, I expected all this. Did we not all expect it?
Part of the rubric is that there is only so much he can get done by presidential decree.
And even then, if it can't be enacted it won't be enacted.
During his first stint as Pres, he couldn't even get a wall built.

He's already backed off on tariffs.
Last time I was in California every car was foreign. I was told 'we don't buy shit American cars here'
'If you want to see American cars, try the rednecks in the mid west. They love them'.
I appreciate that the rednecks get an unfair slice of voter power.
But adding 25% to the cost of a car all down the Eastern and Western seaboards is not going to win votes.

Not that he needs votes. He's done now.
So I maintain he just pissing about, as president. He doesn't give a shit what gets done.
He's there simply to dodge the courts, a battle he has now won.

Jesus, Germany is being dragged into Trump's chaotic second term. Apparently USAID is being funded by money from sales of the popular and traditional Xmas fruit bread cake.

"President Donald Trump drew instant mockery on Thursday thanks to his ill-informed all-caps Truth Social rant in which he alleged USAID had "stollen" money"

I thought he was going to change the rules so that if you serve a single term and then get re-elected, you can serve another terms so, 1, then 2. But NOT 2, then 1, simply to stop Obama, who I hope would defeat him (as long as the persistent, but poorly evidenced theory that THIS election was rigged, and Harris won, isn't true. If that happened, democracy has already fallen).

Really? Hadn't heard that one.

Brilliant, I'm going to change the constitution to benefit me but only me not the guy that could beat me.

So Trump

Americans are obsessed with the constitution.
Especially right wing Americans.
This is the lifeblood of the gun lobby.

Changing the constitution to them is on a par with the UK getting rid of our monarchy.

I appreciate that the crazies would love it.
But most people who voted for Trump are not crazy As @lasvegan will tell you.
They simply hated Biden and his robotic stand-in.

The idea of changing the constitution so that an 83 year old who, frankly, won't have made America great again,
can can stand for a 3rd term and stay in power till he's 88, is not going to be passed.

And unless he bans voting he may not win again anyway.

I am not a fan of republicans but I really don't think they are all crass and venal,
and would be happy to recapitulate the constitution of North Korea just so they can avoid having to face a public vote.

I honestly believe that some Republicans went into politics to effect change for the good.

If you change the constitution once on an issue such as this, you can change it again.
That would be on a par with our referendum-obsessives here.
It's not how the system works.

The US has amended the constitution five times, once to abolish slavery was it not?
Another was the fifth amendment.
These are monumental issues.
Changing the rules to allow an oaf a third term is not.

We will see about that.

This republican cult can essentially change the constitution at will via the Supreme Court now. They can and will essentially repeal amendments without having to go through the states through their majority in the SC.

His followers will not give a shit, so long as it doesn’t affect them personally. There is no distinction anymore between ‘regular’ trump voters and the ‘crazies’. They are one and the same. you’re applying a level of critical thinking that they simply do not have.

It matters when the issue is being used as a political tool. Which was my point as a bloke with limited interstes in womens sport i have to wonder why i am so consistently asked to have an opnion on this, and why i see it discuss so much more widely that my interest warrants.

Almost like it isnt about womens sport at all.
If Governing bodies are not prepared to do the correct thing for safety it's going to reach politicians for them to do something.

Those in charge of the sport are 100 percent to blame because they were scared to be called transphobic.

The situation I fear is that, even if a majority were strongly opposed to what he is trying to do, mechanisms that people would have to oppose his actions are being removed. The repercussions for individuals raising a voice will become increasingly serious. A large number of autocratic states have unpopular leaders and powerless citizens.
I know this sounds dramatic but I think that if he is still acting with his current level of impunity this time next year it will be too late.

Indeed, I expected it, but the actions and rhetoric have exceeded my fears!
I agree he doesn't give much of a shit what actually gets done, but his ego and machinations may of course allow or result in tons of shit being done 😟.

I love your quote about US cars... excellent stuff 😁.

where does this idea come from? essentially saying the constitution is no longer valid and SC has taken over powers from Congress. i rather think Congress has a different view on that.

Why should people avoid going on holiday to America? What do you think will happen to them?
I think it's about boycotting America in order to weaken the Trump government. Just like some people did with Apartheid South Africa. Contributing to the US economy only helps the current administration.
