He’s doing what he always does. Threaten everyone and hope that one of his targets gives in. When they don’t he’ll back off and then say he’s got what he wants.
Once the rest of the world finally realises he’s full of shit then he’ll wind his neck in.
I think you are absolutely right about this.

The issue is that Canadians can laugh off the sort of nonsense he spouts about being the 51st state. The region which he is now bullshitting about is incredibly sensitive, you have to be extremely diplomatic in your language. I hope he has not inspired hundreds of plans for another 9/11.

If you follow it you'll find it's an independent charity, much of it's income actually comes from the UK Government.

Up till April 2014 the World Service was funded by the foreign office.

Any idea how much money the US Government subsidises private corporations ?

The power shift out there since the 1980s means that's the only way it gets them to do anything.
The U.K. Government doesn’t have any money, it’s not theirs. Neither does it’s foreign office.

What benefit is it to the U.K. taxpayer in these difficult financial times we are living in that the BBC provides a world service?

This dynamic is being writ large in the USAID programme, which is the very definition of Government over reach and largesse.

I doubt US taxpayers would support these donations to the BBC regardless of the technical merits, if they exist.

Well Trump offering to redevelop Gazza will save UK taxpayers for funding the rebuild (as promised by Angela Raynor) so I for one would not be unhappy with that . (y)

I haven’t been following this thread in recent days but this is a disgraceful and utterly callous take on Trump’s announcement that ‘America will take over Gaza’, remove Palestinians from their land and develop it for ‘real estate’ for basically rich people.

Trump is advocating ethnic cleansing to support his own real estate, empire building aspirations, supported by the far right expansionist extremists of the Israeli Government. Forcibly, by violence or intimidation, removing an ethnic population from their homeland contravenes international law.

If people think Trump is bluffing, read back on the early days of the Gaza conflict thread or even this one - There has been plenty posted on how Trump is aligned with Netanyahu’s far right, policies on expanding Israel into the occupied areas of Palestine (ie West Bank and Gaza) , plenty of posts on how his first administration came up with a peace plan that sold the Palestinians down the river, excluded them from participating in any peace process, excluded the possibility of a 2 state solution and handed over 2/3 of the West Bank to Israel (that’s after Trump made Jerusalem the de facto capital of Israel by moving the US Embassy there).

If the Palestinians fight back or resist ethnic cleansing, or if any proxies of Iran do so on their behalf, then they will be considered in breach of the current ceasefire. That will give Israel the carte blanche it seeks to initiate further attacks on Syria, Lebanon and Iran.

The whole thing is a traversty.

But, but - he surely knows more about Gaza than anyone. He's met important historians and politicans who have been amazed by the amount he knows about Gaza and what it needs.
Still think he’s talking about someone called Gary rather than Gaza…

Woke up to the this new revelation from the maniac on the radio news this morning. In my haze I was not sure if I was still dreaming, but my first thought was "Disney land Gaza" does not seem appealing.

Had to unblock him to see what he had said to get that comment, totally agree with you, and he's now re-blocked! :D
You are missing all the fun by blocking him. He’s great entertainment, a bit like NSC very own talking dog, not brightest dog mind But entertaining nonetheless.

Do you make the same claim about (e.g.) Tesco? After all, technically their money is actually our money which we hand over in exchange for things to be provided. It’s no different to the Government, only where Tesco provides bread and milk the Government provides hospitals and roads.

But I'm healthy and have a helicopter. Why should I pay for hospitals and roads...?
