This season's Spanish Dave for last season's Spanish Dave ...

Fair comparison, but the same should apply to Ward versus Bridge. Last season Bridge was magnificent, this season, he has bits falling off him and is not the same player. Ward has missed very few games and in this respect can be seen as an astute signing.

I think he is doing a good job in difficult circumstances.
This season and maybe next are a watershed as the clubs (not including a few) are having negotiate with FFP restrictions but the Players (Lewis Grabban et al) have not got it into their brains yet that their demands will not always be met.

I'm glad the club are sticking to their guns with this. Even if it means that it appears we sometimes have to settle for 2nd or 3rd best option in the transfer market.
Until players/agents have got it into their bonces that this is here to stay, and active employment at the going rate is better than being a once overpaid player on the scrapheap.

I think us and most other clubs may have to remain underwhelmed by signings for a year or two yet.....

Our playing budget increased from last season so presumably FFP isn't impacting on player recruitment.

Exactly ... plus we knew well in advance that Bridcutt and Barnes were off and that's a sizeable chunk of cash that might have been used. We end up with Stephens (assume to be OK, albeit not huge money) Obika and Rodriguez both of whom I assume to be cheap and neither of which look to be up to the task.

Conway is a great example, he demonstrated how he could change games and yet we let him go off to Blackburn, preferring to keep Buckley who can set the world alight but is plagued with injury. I know who I'd prefer in the short term

It does all seem very odd ... end of December on the fringes of challenging for play offs, about to pocket some good money on top of a budget that hasn't been fully used and we do virtually no business.

Maybe we've written this season off (reasonable now I think) and are planning to use our (cash) reserves for a full scale assault in the summer window. I'd go along with that now for sure

Burke started his job in Jan 2012. He was in place for the Summer signings of 2012 so presumably behind helping Gus and then Oscar sign for example >>
Kuz, Ulloa, Orlandi, Lopez, Crofts, Dobbie, Ward, Chicksen, Ince, Obika, Andrews, Agustien, Stephens, Hammond, Bridge, (loan) Conway, Orlandi and Upson.

I'd say thats a pretty good strike rate. And obviously he's identified a whole raft of players that for whatever reasons Gus or Oscar didn't want to proceed with or because our valuation didn't match with the player/agents or clubs valuation.
Our player budget went up 40% or so in 2012/13 and a further 5-10% in 2013/14.

Yes Vicente (who's retired and never played), Bridge (injured most of this season), and Bridcutt (perhaps adequately replaced) have left but also a long line of now League 1 or lesser Champ players or worse; Cook, El Abd, Dicker, Painter, Elphick, Barker, Adgenstein etc.

So when there's a whole team operating across Europe involved in player acquisition - headed by David Burke - where the vast majority on here have no idea what he does, how he goes about it, and what restrictions / SWOT considerations he has to abide by, there are people call for his dismissal purely based on their perception of results...?

Yeah, I like NSC after a defeat. Funny place.

One area where I think we might be missing Gus Poyet - and perhaps to a lesser extent Dick Knight before him - is in the selling of the club to potential signings.

Both were known to be brilliant at convincing players to buy in to the Albion and its potential - often to the extent where they signed players who were talking to bigger clubs.

I am sure, although I may be wrong, that I read somewhere that when Craig Mackail-Smith met with Poyet he was blown away by his enthusiasm and spent hours chatting to him about how he would be used, where the club was going etc, compared to a short meeting with representatives from West Ham.

Now to us, the potential of the Albion is obvious. But plenty of teams have good training grounds and stadiums at this level.

Maybe we are missing that because our budget certainly hasn't gone down since last season but the standard or signings appears to.

It might be that David Burke is good at identifying targets etc and Poyet was the one who sold the club to them.

Not a criticism of Oscar Garcia by the way, just a potential reason why our signings seem to have dipped despite having the same basic recruitment team.

He's not had the best of years this year but still has credit in the bank IMHO. Upson, Conway & Ward were good finds, I don't think it was Burke's fault that we couldn't hang on to Conway.

Also - isn't he in charge of development squad aquisition? That looks like it's coming along very, very nicely as it goes.

You talked to him TLO on Albion Roar, can you tell me what his own playing career level reached.

Upson was brought in the previous season under Gus and one of the players who I am sure was influenced by signing for Gus, like many of the others.

Careful there! Way too much common sense when mindless over-reaction is what's called for.

How will his playing career help him with contract negotiations? Sticking to a playing budget? Reporting to the Chairman?
The club do have a large scouting network you know.
Can I suggest that his job is to manage the scouts, find out about availability, cost and willingness to play for the club and report findings to the Head Coach and board?
What that has anything to do with his level of playing ability is a mystery to me.

Another one with the audacity to talk sense! What on earth is NSC coming to?
