Yep more of the same.

You must have done some homework to arrive at a price that is spot on for all major manufacturers entry level bikes.

It's sale time and LBS' are keen to clear out 2013 stock, they'll price match.

Pretty much all bikes at this level will have pros and cons, so there's no right answer.
Your heart needs listening too as well, you will ride THE bike more than A bike.

Shop around try as many bikes as you can, you'll quickly get the feel for not only the bike, but the shop too.

Does your budget needs to take into account of accessories, again a good shop might help you out a little.
Helmet, clothing, etc. At some point you might want specific pedals and shoes.

You will need a decent track pump with gauge (£20max)

Sorry, no caps, they were a one time deal.

Thanks. Yeah I was told to buy at this time of year to get discounts on the 2013 bikes and £550 budget is just for the bike itself. Already have accessories just need to invest in some clothing :) I'm not in a hurry for clipless pedals yet but I will eventually get them and shoes.

Thanks for the help everyone. At the moment I think I'll go with the Allez.

You do need to try as many bikes as you can.

Chances are you'll come back to the Allez anyway, but the geometry just might not suit you, when compared to say a Felt, for arguments sake.

or a Basso

Or a Giant

(You need to tap out MrBigShot, I can confuse and pi$$ you off all night long )

Someone will lend you £40

Scott Spedster, anybody?:-

 Thanks, I'll check out a lot of bikes this week and see which feels right.

Out of interest, of those bikes and the ones previously mentioned what would be your preference?

Last one, I think this is Moto's steed.

Sorry that's an impossible question, esp as I haven't specced the bikes.
Plus they're all t'internet so other than trying a Giant in Shoreham, and Felt in Worthing and Chi it'll be hard to get on one.
The Basso should represent best VFM, but I don't know of a local dealer.

As Pogue said when you get down to the nitty gritty, it's all a matter of personal taste.

I too wouldn't touch a Trek, and would want either the Felt or Scott to work for me, but as said that's no guarantee that it would.

How long would one you seasoned cyclist's say it would take to cycle from the the top bit of lewes road by the stadium into the city centre? (going straight down lewes road)

Well, it's about 5 miles, so realistically, 20 minutes if you get a good run, to a maximum of 30 if Lewes Road is as mad as it can be.

Cool, I'm probably a little further down than the stadium actually, just past the bridge car park. Going to brighton uni at the grand parade campus (with a large group and all houses that size had gone) so am trying to figure out the best ways of getting there.

Another brilliant days racing at Eneco Tour. I've really enjoyed watching the two stages this weekend as it's like watching a classics race. Stannard was immense going solo from a long way out and thanks to a super strong Stybar jumping off the front near the end Stannard had someone to work with in the final few kms or else he would have been swallowed up. Again, well worth catching any highlights that are available.

One of these days Stannard is surely going to take a major classics win in some style. He deserves to.

Still a bit gutted for ZS over the Roubaix debacle.

He clearly was the man to take on Cancellara, and we the geeks were so far ahead of cycling on that one.

I forgot to say yesterday.
As you'd expect at the sportive there was a pooh load of bike porn inc one of these.

I know they're not popular on geeks, but it sure was striking in a stealth bomber stylee.

My cap arrived!

Thanks goodness it was wrapped in bubble wrap. Was pouring raid today and the outer envelope was wet as a shag!

Looks brilliant. Flip top mode is my preference.

Great stuff.

Not bad for 18,000 (ish) miles traveled.

I hope you approve of the subtle use of the word 'geek'.

Please tell me the guy wasn't riding that in a sportive!
Hell yeah.

I'd imagine it was the most expensive bike there, but as you'll see in a few weeks, not by much.

They had us going off in 20's or so.
We were ready so joined the first group away, inc Mr Cervelo.

I didn't actually notice it as we were fairly tightly penned in for the safety talk.

Jnr spotted it and asked 'what is that!!'
When I looked (as said it's striking) I then looked at the fella on it, and said to them both:-

'don't worry son, we'll take him around the 50 mile mark'.

Much to the amusement of all concerned, inc Mr Cervelo.

I'm sorry that is a seriously twattish bike to be riding round a sportive. A disc! Really!

Apart from anything else a TT bike is not really safe in a group.

I'm sure he's got an equally expensive proper bike that he could ride on.

Also, you need to be riding sub 50 25s to justify that!

I can't remember if he had a disc on the back.

As he wasn't on the 'fun' route, he'd have taken it over Ditchling Beacon.
