I see, sorry I assumed that was an actual picture of his steed!
As near as, he certainly didn't have wheels to be ashamed of.

As said this whole new world is coming your way.

Next you'll be telling me they can change gear with their brake levers!
That's crazy talk, you've clearly not slept for a week.

It'll be interesting to gauge your reaction after your first sportive, being a old skool bikeist.
Well over 50% of the bikes there will be show ponies, and cost about the same.
Whereas the others will still all look their Sunday best.

You don't get many pulling a racer out of the shed, and slipping on a pair of trainers.
That would be like turning up to compete at an F1 weekend with a 10 year old Fiesta.

That makes me sad. I always liked them.

Watching their riders sign on for Paris-Roubaix earlier this year was brilliant, they were like condemned men - the team was contractually bound to take part but none of their riders were remotely suited to the race. Clearly they were the riders who had drawn the short straw.

I think it'll certainly be an eye opener.

My mate now can't make the new forest sportive but is suggesting the south downs as an alternative - I'm not sure I'll manage a hilly 100 miles on my current twice weekly turbo sessions!

IL, 100 miles is psychologically daunting, but it reality achievable with the right preparation on the day.

I did the 124mile The Long One earlier in the year with Pogue, Hamilton and Spreadbetting, and I had an unfortunate dose of the runs for 24 hours before, feeling like I was wiped out. However having paid for it, I went anyway, and got round it fine despite feeling I maybe shouldn't go.

IMHO the key to tackling something like 100miles is setting the right pace for yourself, latching onto a small group so you're not doing all the work on your own, and probably most critically is fuelling yourself.

I pretty much get through 2 x 750ml bottles of fluid per 30-40 miles, and am eating constantly. On The Long One, I got through about 6 banana's, 4 flapjacks, 6 jaffa cakes, 5 gels.....

Even if you're not feeling 100%, or fully prepared, taken at a good pace, stopping every 30 miles or so at their well stocked feed stations, you'll find you'll do the 100 miles easier than you thought. I'd say throw yourself into it!

Bold, I think you must have misplaced your 'Geeks spotters guide'.

IL could wear his Team GB kit if he wants, even though it was a shocking colour scheme that year.

Now that would turn some heads and not in a good way.

I appreciate bold taking the time to give advice though. And to be fair, I've never ridden 124 miles in one go.... ever!

Maybe it is time to just bite the bullet and go for it!

Of course, you'd have to be a right mentals to want to do that!!

It'll be just like the old days, except, every part of your body will hurt like hell and you won't be able to walk properly the next day.

What's not to love?

EVENTUALLY and it took a load of encouragement, IL casually mentioned his time as a GB Junior and beyond, racing with and against Mr Wiggins et al.

Ha ha, got you. Teaching the chicken how to lay eggs!

I'll get my coat! (and geeks cap....)
Not really, it's not like the chicken is strutting around, covered in feathers and clucking all the time.

I remember reading his 'confession' thinking:-

'well there's a better man than me, everybody would have read my name dropping clunk in post number 2'

All sensible advice though!

My problem is that I'll never be as fit as I was and therefore I always feel like I'm going crap. This puts me off doing the sportives with my mate but I think I just need a change of mindset!

On another note, vuelta starts this weekend. I'm excited from a cycling point of view but I've got fantasy burn out!

Was also wondering how our only active geek racer is getting in this season? Glanders lack of fantasy/geek input means he must have got his head down and attacked that 4 hour mark for a 100.

Seen nothing on Strava from Glanders either recently...

On another note, I've joined the Brighton Excelsior Cycling Club, and aim to do some TT's and track racing with them in Preston Park next year. This was just emailed to me from the club's top guy at the East Sussex Cycling Association '100' TT:

The Result? Probably Steve Kane’s finest victory to date, in 3hr 50min 51sec. He beat his own recently set club record by over 9 minutes; he’s now improved by 16 minutes over last season. It was a tremendous feat; in the later stages all riders had to cope with heavy traffic heading for Eastbourne and the Air Show.

average speed 26 mph!

Plenty of that in the old days. I remember feeling like I was climbing everest when our room was up a flight of stairs after a particularly miserable 80 miles in the rain and hills of Ireland. I think i had a long rest halfway up!

TTs are painful but useful as you can measure against yourself in a, sort of, reproducible way.

The track is great, once you get the speed in your legs it's great fun racing. Ever ridden a fixed wheel?
