TTs are painful but useful as you can measure against yourself in a, sort of, reproducible way.

The track is great, once you get the speed in your legs it's great fun racing. Ever ridden a fixed wheel?

No, but the club have some I can use. Will start at the Friday night training sessions and take it from there. My son has raced this season in the U8's, and with me being there with him anyway, and adults of all abilities racing on the same night, seems stupid for me not to give it a go as well.

Excelsior also do a Steyning 10 TT every Tuesday through the summer, so will dip my toe in with that first.

I should also add I hit the big 40 next season, I think I can genuinely say "I will never be as good as I could have been!"

It's definitely an interesting experience when you first get on the fixed wheel!
Great racing though and not too expensive for the kit (comparatively!).

EVENTUALLY and it took a load of encouragement, IL casually mentioned his time as a GB Junior and beyond, racing with and against Mr Wiggins et al.
There's another regular contributor to this thread who has been known to turn out on his bike, legitimately wearing a GB team kit. He'll no doubt underplay the achievement, but his dad is quite proud of him.

Do tell. Surely he didn't have to turn out in lime green too!

A somewhat Greek-style blue and white, actually.

European Age Group Triathlon Championships, 2009. 35 degree heat wasn't particularly helpful, or pleasant though. Me and a couple of Irish guys were standing around in Transition pre-race looking at the tanned Spaniards and Italians and wishing it was 10 degrees and raining! Who'd have thought Holland would be so hot!

It certainly isn't one of those 'I could've been a contender' things, and I don't have a photo of me beating any Olympians... :p

Yeah but going for a quick dip before hand and an amble round after hardly constitutes sport, does it?

The Olympic velodrome opens to the public in a few months, that'll sort out the men from the boys on a 'geek' jolly.

It's almost as if you were there! Sadly that's a pretty accurate race report for me - Swimming isn't a strong point for me, but I wasn't last out of the water. My run was shocking partly due to cramp and the heat, and my 10k time was a full 10 minutes slower than my qualification time. Still, shouts from random people in the crowd of "Come on GB" will stay with me forever!

Great stuff.

I'd hazard a guess yours and my definitions of the words dip and amble vary by a couple of hours.

For the Olympic-distance race (1.5k/40k/10k) I managed 2:33:54 overall. My splits were 32:05/01:10:07/49:04. By comparison the winner of my Age Group did 01:57:31 (19:44/01:01:51/34:12).

So, dip and amble seem pretty accurate!

What age group? Or is that a secret!

Sounds a good experience nonetheless. I've got a 'woe is me' story about why I couldn't ride the world's that is too long winded for here! :( And I couldn't have been a contender either - a jobbing pro-conti domestique, at best!

Funnily enough the hottest race I ever did was in Holland - was about 40 degrees.

It was 25-29.I might have another crack at qualifying again at some point in the future, but I still don't like swimming enough!

Interesting that they have that age group. Presumably you must have to be amateur as all the pros are knocking out times about 15 minutes quicker than the winner in your race?

Indeed. It's a weird quirk, hence my reluctance to gloat about it. Age groups in tri are split into 5-year slots once you hit adulthood, continuing until you run out of people - it's nice that it's inclusive, but the junior/youth/senior/vet set-up seems more sensible, especially as anyone 18-35 who is good enough will be racing pro anyway (not that the sport is rolling in money or opportunity even for the best!). It does give everyone something to aim for though, even if it's just a hobby.

All very interesting. I've thought about giving triathlon a go though I had to stop running as I tore my hip capsule (twice!) and acl. I'm not a great swimmer but have done a 1.20 half marathon.
