My CB bitser work hack is just about done, ridden it a few weeks now and all adjusted/comfy.

Have ordered a new seat post as it should be 26.4mm not 26.2 and keeps slipping.

mudguards £15 off eabay, needed a tweak as the campag brakes are short reach, rear rack liberated from a dumped scrapper . . . took the Campag rear mech off for a Suntour one I had laying about which has a long reach and so I have all the cogs. just need to cable up the front mech, although don't really need it.
would be nice to find a campag rear mech, but probably cost as much as the bike!!!

thanks, its a proper bitser, built for under £300, I did have some bits on another bike, If I sell the other 531 frame It'll pretty much offset the cost . . certainly a better deal than a new bike at that price

I sold a mountain bike as well as I didn't like it, am tempted by Statos idea of a shopper BMX!

uh oh . . . what's happened ?

The stem clamp I bought is much too big and I'm 99.9% sure I won't be able to buy one that can be tightened onto a 21mm tube.

I might review Plan A as at least I now know I don't need the bolt and quill.

can you remind us what bits ( and sizes) you have, and the hole diameter in thhe forks (22.2mm? )

and maybe we can make some ridiculous suggestions.

The forks appears to be 22.2mm.
The bar tube is definitely 21mm.

The q-lock together in the headset.

I want a blue BMX clamp on which to attach my old skool bars brakes and grips.

I now have 2 options which don't work.

A quill tube with integral clamp which I think is 22.2mm (so too big)
A mahoosive clamp that is far to big for the 21mm steerer.

What I really need is a BMX stem that can be attached to a 21mm tube.

Guess what I can't find?

so you need something like this . . . . 22.2 for the fork quill stem bit . . . . . and 21mm for the bars?

could you not adapt, with a sleeve?

photo's might be useful.

2.2mm is standard for most road bikes, most bats are 1" though

You probably already know, given your experience, but I found a shim to be the perfect solution when I had trouble on one of mine with an odd size seatpost.

I thought he was going to launch into a full scale Art Attack at first with all those bits :D

Saddles are such a personal thing...I've lost count of the number I've got through over the years.
Interestingly (or not) - when I got my Cinelli I was ready to swap out the saddle straight away for my old Rolls - but the own brand "C-Wing" that it came with was so comfy that I've left it on there. Fits like a glove.

It took me a few a saddle swaps, buying and selling on eBay and also making use of Bike Radar's saddle swap thread, to finally get the one that works for me.
Specialized Romin Evo Expert finally hit the comfort spot, eventually. On the smaller width it felt good up to about 40 or 50 miles. When the ride went beyond that it clearly wasn't quite working. That's when I discovered the measuring sit bones tip. Moved up to the wider version and that's now my saddle heaven. I've ridden plenty of centuries on it, and a bit beyond with no trouble at all. Only ride that ever found it out was a 200 mile Audax. But that found every part of my body out and I'll never ever be doing that again!

TBH I didn't know there were that many different sizes, especially with such fine differences. 0.2mm is close to bugger all, its just the pinch bolt halves have touched before its tight tight. New post, in the post, £15!

So here's the whole thing without the headset.

IMG_20220426_173750_186~3.jpg

I have Plan A.
Which is pretty much the same size as the blue forks end of the steering column.
So would need 1 or 2mm taken off it.
My lathe man says that's asking too much and it will snap when under pressure.

I also have my preferred option Plan B.

Which is one of these, but it will need to clamp around the 21mm tube.
With that I could then just buy a longer tube to tidy it up, make it safer, and top it off with a bar end cap.

OK, so the blue clamp is tough and BMX . . . The old shopper is a crusty chrome 21mm tube . . . So to make it work you need a short piece of tube with a 21mm Internal diameter and an XX Diameter to match that blue clamp . . . . That will be simplest and safest IMO . . . Also, if nothing 'matching is readily available, anyone with a lathe will be able to quickly turn you a smal piece from a closely matched tube, from aluminium. . . You only need as much as the clamp, so 30-40mm ?

I followed that up with a post at 18:39 - does that work?

(Although I've now realized the space for the handlebars is too big)

Going to be in Brighton for a week in June. Is anyone able to recommend somewhere that rents bikes (pref hybrid or mountain) by the week?

Hello mate Pouge here!

The actual bike shops don't do hires...

However, I have heard good things about this service: https://fatllama.com/lp/brighton-bike-hire

Loads of people renting their bikes out, loads of choice.

Other than that, the only place I can think of is at Stanmer Park. Not sure about their weekly rates, but I have found their website: https://www.brightonbikehire.com/

Hope you can find something from one of these. Let us know how you get on!
