I really like the guy, and I know he loves the club and has been a great loyal servant over the years, but I think we'd all admit he was a bit limited in his ability as a player, despite the fact that he always gave 100%... Does anyone else think he may possibly be a bit lacking in his coaching skills given the quality of some of the players now at the club? Does it make any difference - do you have to be a good player to become a good coach? With the ability some of our players possess I do wonder if Charlie is the best person they can learn from...

Absolute 100% agree-in fact it often works better if the player was not so good..

But Charlie was a battler....

Look at the playing careers of Ferguson, Mourinho and Wenger....not exactly glittering with success but they've done OK at coaching/managing, wouldn't you say?. Being good at one does not necessarily make you good at the other.

Coaching? what can players learn after hundreds of games - hundreds of coaches - hundreds of this that and the other!! I think its all about instinct---some players have it more than others.

The number of outstanding players who have failed as coaches/managers is endless eg. Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, Bryan Robson? Coaching involves a lot of different skills and Gus has seen enough in Charlie Oatway to make him an integral part of his team. I should think that man management is a big part in that decision. An excellent choice in my book anyway.

How on earth would anyone of us know what Oatway is like as a coach on the training pitch. Since he's been involved, we've been successful so that's good enough for me.

Being a coach is all about experience not past playing ability, how many top golf coaches were top players? I think the answer is "None" does being a great player make you a great manager? probably not (Glen Hoddle for one example)

Someone above wrote, since Charlie has been involved we have been doing well, sort of sums it up for me really. Charlies passion and love for the club and the game is bound to rub off on the players he is a top bloke in my opinion.

I play golf and a handicap of 7. The last two rounds I've played with a 18 and 19 handicaps and my game was poor, These two kept trying to tell me where Im going wrong, Jesus, I know where Im going wrong and having hackers trying to give me advise is laughable. I expect its the same with the likes of Vicente having to listen for advice from oatway.

Would he react if the same came from Gus or Tanno.

So, given that you are so good and don't need help, why haven't you cured yourself?
