Look at the playing careers of Ferguson, Mourinho and Wenger....not exactly glittering with success but they've done OK at coaching/managing, wouldn't you say?. Being good at one does not necessarily make you good at the other.
Not that I am a big fan of his but Alex Ferguson's playing record, albeit in Jockland, reads played 317, scored 170, plus 9 Scottish rep team appearances. If I had that record I'd be a bit miffed with the "not exactly glittering" comment.
The responses on here seem to sum up Oatway - good pro, seems to have the bit of character required around the first team, but is probably used more by Gus as, what we used to call, a trainer, rather than a recognised coach who would generate their own ideas for set pieces and style of play.
