I wish we had proper (non-hooligany) Ultras in the UK. I go to see Cork City play a couple of times a year and their ultras are awesome. Average attendance a couple of thousand, but the ultras are there 90 minutes before the game, singing CONTINUOUSLY until 15 minutes after the final whistle, waving flares (coloured burny things not hippy trousers), etc. It makes for a San Siro European Cup type atmosphere in a pissy windswept non-league standard venue.

I'm confused...at what point during this matchday routine do they go to the pub?

Due to the decline in atmosphere at Brighton matches, and football in general. A few of us have decided to set up an ‘ultra group’. Our aims are to improve the atmosphere at both home and away matches. Increasing not only the noise, but the range of songs, the colour and just trying to have more fun whilst watching football.

We will remain independent of the club and will therefore fund all of our own projects. We will continue to support the team through thick and thin, and will be only supportive throughout the game.

Ultra groups massively increase the atmosphere on the continent, and there are a number of burgeoning groups in England and Scotland, that have done tremendous amounts to bring back atmosphere to British grounds eg. Aberdeen, Celtic, York etc. We have been renowned for having a good away support and this is something we want to build on, as this has seen a recent dip. We also aim to improve home support and ultimately hope to have Brighton renowned as some of the loudest fans in the League.

The word ultra is often (wrongly) associated with violence and hooliganism, it must be stated that the group have nothing to do with this, and are not in any way, shape or form a hooligan group. We completely discourage football violence in all it’s forms.

The group is very new and is looking for as many people as possible to help, whoever you are, and however many games you get to. All that is asked of potential group members is that they are willing to do as much as they can to support the team, any contribution to the group, no matter how big or small will be greatly received. This group is about bringing to Brighton matches what football should be about, enjoying yourself, watching football, and supporting the Albion.

We want to make our average game, a bit more like this.

We have done it before. Only problem is that you need a decent stadium, not a running track to make a real impact with this sort of thing.

Just wait

I think you could do it, many of those stadiums have the running track etc, just take a look at this, running track, no roof, rain the lot

[YT]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/en7pPKOJE-Y&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/en7pPKOJE-Y&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/YT]

But of course we wouldn't be allowed flags that big, too dangerous, and no standing up. How come it is so dangerous for us to stand up, yet those little Japanese fellas apparently are not in so much danger?

NB, watch the whole video, would we be able to sustain such a noise?

Would any of the singing section or regulars of the old North Stand really enjoy being told what to sing and when by some sad little superfan who stands on a little platform - with his back to the game throughout - starting off songs for these "ultras" to sing with a megaphone?

Not really. Cork have a dreadful stadium. Their 'ultras' group is only a couple of hundred people, but they create a big match atmosphere just by their actions. Flares, constant chanting, giant flags, etc. See photo slideshow (with dreadful dance track playing) here: YouTube - Commandos 84

Might be about time we did have someone like that, rather then the tepid ripple of chanting that goes around Withdean two or three times in a game, interspersed with the occasional song from the far-away end. All finished off with some nonsense aimed towards the stewards.
