Back to struggling I see to comprehend that the oven ready deal mentioned in oct 19, nov 19 and dec 19 in the run up to the election was a reference to the withdrawal deal

Just a couple of days ago a Beeb article referred to the EU Withdrawal Agreement as

The underlying point is that Boris Johnson negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the EU by accepting a particular solution to the NI issue, went into the election claiming that he had an oven ready deal, told business groups that GB-NI paperwork (resulting from his amendment to the May deal) could be put in the bin and finally announced that he wasn't prepared to honour this aspect of the treaty anyway.

As JCFG seems to have stood down from his role as a freelance Tory Party apologist, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Its easy to forget how this government forced the WA agreement through refusing to let parliament scrutinise it in any detail, they even put the 31st January exit date into law. Apparently it was all done in too much of a rush?

Johnson knew it trashed the integrity of the Union but as usual thought he could wing it and get it changed later

In the years ahead we will finally realise the EU was the glue that kept the UK together and the SM was the foundation of peace in Ireland. Brexit reality is coming home..

One thing is for sure Johnson will be no Churchill...

Originally it was supposed to be three days to achieve Johnson's (entirely irrelevant) deadline of 31st October. As someone said at the time, in the year 2000 Craig David met a girl on Monday, took her for a drink on Tuesday then made love to her for longer than the Government was prepared to give Parliament to debate the most important piece of legislation in most of our lifetimes.

The UK’s new trade deal with Japan commits it to tougher restrictions on state aid than the ones it is currently offering the EU in the Brexit talks, potentially undermining its negotiating position with Brussels.

In the bilateral UK-Japan agreement announced in principle on Friday, London and Tokyo have agreed to replicate the restrictions on subsidies in the EU-Japan deal that went into effect last year. That agreement prohibits the governments from indefinitely guaranteeing the debts of struggling companies or providing an open-ended bailout without a clear restructuring plan in place.

By contrast, the UK has repeatedly told the EU that it must have total freedom over state aid after the end of the Brexit transition period with complete autonomy over future subsidy decisions, subject to WTO rules.

So Liz Truss has now agreed to the exact same thing that Johnson and his mob are insisting cannot happen (and she probably didn't realise it) in order to be able to announce the Japan deal. Shame that no one in Government seems to be able to do detail. Just further proof that there isn't and never was any 'plan', just a bunch of total incompetents blindly flailing around in the dark
