Solly’s had a brilliant season. I think there was legit criticism of him when GP first took over and he wasn’t really performing, but that LWB position has been perfect for him, and pretty much since his man of the match vs. Man Utd has been a consistent 7/8/9 out of 10 performer each week.

Like Gross, he’s adapted to a new role for how manager wants to play.

We probably could do with more competition in that spot, but once he returns from injury it’s his place to lose as far as I’m concerned.

March has had a good season, I think everyone can acknowledge that he's worked really hard and pushed himself forward.

However I still think there are question marks over his ability to defend. He doesnt tackle well and does concede free kicks in dangerous areas. I know the penalty at home against Southampton was outside the box, but we were all saying in the week leading up to that game, "don't give away stupid free kicks on the edge of the box, because ward-prowse will punish us". He was unlucky to give away a penalty, but it doesn't change the fact that his tackle was completely clumsy. It was not the tackle of a defensive player and playing someone who can't tackle in that role will cost us in the future.

Thats not Solly's fault that he's been asked to play there, and it doesnt change his effort or general overall performances which were good this year, but he's not a wingback, he's a winger. I would like to see him play in an advanced role like Trossard or MacAllister.

The flip side is playing a defensive player at wing back who struggles going forward such as Burn, also costs us. So there is a balance that needs to be struck. March is probably the best we've got for the role at the moment. But going forward if we want to improve our results, we need a specialist wing back like Sessengon or Rico Henry.

We need someone who can deliver like Solly from the left hand side.

Not been a fan of the experiments with putting players out of position there. Needs must, but it's shown up a big hole in the squad

Solly is well below the required standard if we want to push on as a team and not be fighting relegation every season. Burn is not a left back nor a left wing back and anyone who thinks he's the long term answer needs sectioning.

People are being a little harsh on this post, IMO.

To be fair, Solly, pre injury, had a fantastic season. Potter turned him into a LWB and he stepped up and had some great games. Man U at home stands out. And he'd just got his shooting confidence when injury struck.

But if we want to push on, which is what the quoted post said, are we not after someone a little quicker (by EPL standards) and with a more consistent left foot, with Solly as back up. I mean - he's FINE for a 20-16th place squad but that's not our ambition.

And it's spot on about Burn.

Absolute, total nonsense re: Solly.

He was outstanding in that position this season and was without doubt in with a chance of getting an England call up and may well next season. He’s one of the best wing backs in the PL.

I say that because he's totally incapable of delivering a ball with accuracy or purpose. Yes runs a lot, yes dribbles a lot and even beats a man occasionally but the final ball doesn't come close to convincing me. Given our VERY well documented issues with final balls we need better than March. Thanks to him for the effort, some good performances this year for sure but have to face facts he's just never going to be the player we need.

Oh, and as Guiness Boy points out, most of you can't read a post thoroughly and process it before getting all foamy-mouthed... But then we knew that already didn't we?

Complete agree that Sessegnon or Henry would be absolutely perfect for us [emoji106]

Seasons are long. There are going to be injuries and suspensions. I suspect there’s enough room for a Solly AND a new LWB challenging for that spot. I do wonder if the two names above will cost too much though, and if we’ll instead delve into the Polish or South American markets again.

I agree with most of that, although he was actually (in my opinion) our best player in the first four or five games of last season, along with Trossard, before weirdly being dropped when Potter pursued a back four with Burn at left back.

Solly has done well, and proved many wrong and certainly deserves a chance to kick on in the LWB role.

He does have his weaknesses, he blows hot and cold offensively but I think he has done well enough to get a chance to see if he can continue to improve.

As for one of the best LWB in the league and an England call... I think that’s a bit of a stretch

Naylor has run a story in the Athletic so I assume there’s some merit in it. You’re right about Karbowick though, he can play both positions as demonstrated by one of the showreels on YouTube which also seems to suggest he looks more of a right footed player who likes to cut in when on the left but he does possess a left foot. He’s only just turned 20 so perhaps he’s still in ‘one for the future’ category and we’ll see him introduced more as next season progresses.

I think I’d prefer proper competition for Solly who for me still lacks some defensive competency despite the great season he’s had.

Thing with Henry and Sessegnon is they are almost household names. We were saying these names (myself included) last summer and it didn't happen. They haven't really kicked on this year in basic figures (3 goals and 4 assists between them this season) and they probably still command a 15-20m fee because most fans in the Prem are advocating them.

Think Andy Naylor is right in suggesting players slightly outside of the box but with good stats as that seems to be our transfer policy these days.
