Like Solly then?

I think he could compete with any of those. If he had stayed fit I wouldnt been shocked to see him picked in the last England squad, especially since Chilwell has been so-so this season.

No, Solly did not play left back or left wing back as an England youth.

I would have been shocked if he had been included in an England squad a) because Southgate doesn't seem to call up players outside of his 'guys' and b) Solly is nowhere near international standard

Chilwell (current England squad member) Creswell (capped by England), Digne (current France squad member), Castagne (current Belgian squad member), Targett (ex-England youth player), Reguilón (capped by Spain, Real Madrid have a buy back clause).

The first four of those, completely granted (alongside the already-mentioned Shaw, Cancelo and Robertson), but not the last two. Solly is an extremely solid player, whose fitness is exemplary enabling him to put in more distance than most of his rivals, and is a lot quicker than many seem to credit him. He has a few downfalls: his heading (I can't believe he's got half of his PL goals via this), his tackling is not top notch, and his finishing/crossing is not up to the standard of the others on this list. Beyond that, he's a top, top player, which is why both our managers that have contrived to keep us in the PL pick him game after game after game.

I can quite believe he could have been picked for an England squad. There were rumours in the press he was wanted by David Moyes at West Ham in the summer and that was under consideration for a squad place. Only factor against it would be him playing for us, but then Southgate had picked Solly for the u21s.

Well.. I disagree. Sad to see that some people already are forgetting how well he played this season, in the toughest league in the world.

If you think about, very few of the Hughton squad survived the cull made by Potter and his staff and still regularly start in the first team.

Solly

All 3 are extremely capable footballers, adaptable to play in different roles and very good technically. I don’t think GP would have hesitated showing Solly the door if he wasn’t good enough.

So basically, he isn't that good at defending or attacking? That was my point. He's fine, but he's not a top 10 player.

So basically, I never said that he wasn't good at defending or attacking but, basically aka unsurprisingly, you decided to interpret my comments in that light.

If we want to finish as a top 10 side then Solly at LWB is something which needs improvement IMO. Fine squad player but he is not a first choice in that position.

Find both sides interesting in this debate. I actually thought Sollys time was up here and he’d maybe get sold in the Summer, but he’s been immense this season. I’m on the fence as to where he’d sit in terms of top 10 etc player a bit - although this season he could have played mid table prem as a LWB - nearly has with us - certainly we should be mid table as we all know!

Exactly, some incredibly short memories. Out for just few weeks and it’s back to the misguided opinions and criticism of Solly of old.

He has been fantastic this season, he’s a brilliant wing back.

I don't think anybody is criticizing. We're just saying that we could do better.

Out of interest, which of his qualities is 'brilliant'?

Complete agree that Sessegnon or Henry would be absolutely perfect for us [emoji106]

Seasons are long. There are going to be injuries and suspensions. I suspect there’s enough room for a Solly AND a new LWB challenging for that spot. I do wonder if the two names above will cost too much though, and if we’ll instead delve into the Polish or South American markets again.

You are absolutely right that we do need players to cover or share roles. I'd still like to see March not have to have the defensive duties to free him up more. But he is versatile and switching to cover the LWB position, as you say because the season is long, would be a good idea.

You're also right the Sessegnon and Henry might be too costly. I guess they're the ideal players, but whether we could them or not is another question as you point out.

No, you interpreted my comments incorrectly. I never said he wasn't good at defending or attacking. Nor did I say that you said he wasn't good at defending or attacking.

:shootself

You've repeatedly commented on a thread that is specifically about a player that is out on loan and doesn't look as though he has a future with us, and used it to slag off a completely different player, a local lad that is thriving in the PL, and that most of us on here have enjoyed watching his development since he broke through from the DS.
There used to be threads that went under Solly's name on here, but they haven't been quite so prolific of late. We can only wonder why.
