I will not argue that climate change is happening.

The fires are far more severe due to less controlled burns happening in the last few years leaving more fuel on the ground to fan the current flames. Why have there been less controlled burns? Because the climate change lobby objected to them because of carbon emissions.

i was reading that people have been taken to court for cutting down trees for firebreaks. one repeat offender had 50k AUS in fines and cost. his home is standing after recent fires while neighbours went.

I am yet to find evidence that the 'climate change lobby' have effected the amount of controlled burning being carried out. Although this is certainly being bandied about across the media over here. Greens response here.

The Greens types started impacting people being able to conduct burn offs 30+ years ago. People would clear potential fire hazards and just burn it themselves. Then the Greens started to happen and the red tape and having actual fires in backyards/paddocks was eventually banned. The Greens played a role in this.

This is before climate change was a thing but they did indeed start the process of making controlled burning harder to do.

They are only talking about their policies in the now. Not what they were doing years ago to create this situation.

i really think you need to temper that argument with the fact that the rural and volunteer fire services have had their budgets savaged by current LNP , they are woefully under equipped to tackle the fires at the level at which they are now burning.....people have put demography up on the net listing previous fires , property and lives lost ......these fires are going to be worse , the sheer magnitude of this disaster is mind boggling ,over half a million hectares burned , whole villages being evacuated by navy ships and all this while most of Jakarta is swimming under 2 mtrs of flood water after the heaviest rains in 12 years ......bonkers....!!

put that together with the prolonged dry weather and ***** going around lighting fires and i think you may well be able to call this a man made disaster.......heads may very well roll in the aftermath but in the mean time the pollies need to give up with the spin and chit chat and get some fire bombers in the air and get these fires under control......estimated 600 million insurance bill at this stage....

Farmers used to do it themselves.

I remember in the 70s and 80s going out on family friends farms and they do their own controlled burning

That happens a hell of a lot less these days which has increased the dangers around farmlands that border national parks.

Farmers have been fined and even sued for back burning in the last decade

I agree they should just buy 50 water bombers and be done with it.

Trouble is lives will still continue to be lost as long as drongos keep building houses surrounded by bush that they aren't allowed to clear.

still done in W.A mate .....we have had bad bushfires in recent years but nothing like what is happening in Vic , S.A & N.S.W ......get ready for a massive back pedal on the controlled burning issue........the fact you still see utter ****ing tools throwing fag butts out of car windows absolutely amazes me ...should be a 2k on the spot fine or confiscation of vehicle.

Still waiting for evidence of this. I think people give the 'greens types' credit for way more influence than they have ever had.

Would be very interested to read any info you have on this though.

Two things I don't get are

1. Who are the 'greens types' and 'Green lobby' mentioned in this thread? Also 'Greenies' etc mentioned across social media.

2. How have this shadowy group managed to influence so much legislation when the only party that represent them have only ever had a few seats in Parliament?

Do you know what legislation is stopping people from doing this stuff themsleves?

Professor Ross Bradstock seems to think that they are still able to. This is from the link I posted earlier.

Prof Ross Bradstock, the director of the centre for environmental risk management of bushfires at the University of Wollongong, who has been researching bushfires for 40 years.

What can residents do?

Bradstock says research “overwhelmingly” demonstrates that creating a 40- to 50-metre fuel break around a house can give it a much greater chance of surviving fires.

He says property holders are largely free to carry out these activities themselves without needing to seek permits.

Gods country fortnightly
I really hope the 2020's is the decade the world wakes up to what we are doing to our planet. We don't all need to become Greta Thunbergs, small steps, a good start would be...

a) Vote out governments that are CG in denial, like Scott Morrison, Trump and Bolsonaro (Boris is on watch to see what he does)

b) Starve companies from capital that aren't acting on CG, demand this from pension funds, managed funds etc

The situation in Australian is desperate, it really is the first time a first world country has been massively effected by a CG event, the cost to the environment is unprecedented...

Only thing I'll say re the Australian Greens stuff: I'm reliably informed by folks I know in Australia that the original sources for all this guff are far right groups who've seeded anti-Green propaganda onto Facebook, which has then become "truth" as so many people don't fact check.

I'm not pro-Green party (mostly as they don't have the policies to be trusted to govern), but by the same token I dont believe they are on any way to blame for the current situation. It's much bigger than them.

Shocking, sad image, unbelievable. Yep, for the uncaring, I love nature as well as people.

The footage coming out of Australia is incredible and disturbing.

I am proud that Brighton has the only Green MP in the UK. That is an incredible achievement in a country that still has a Dickensian First Past The Post electoral system that polarises opinion and actively discourages parties working together long-term for the greater good.

It is funny that you cannot say the electorate are stupid when it comes to Brexit, but you are allowed to say it in the context of damage to the environment. The fact is everyone needs to wake up and adjust, some more than others.

does that sentence make any sense to you?

i, can't for the life of me, work out your intended meaning,

please educate me

Judging by posts on this and other threads, we are dealing with a dyslexic, or dick head or both. Since he has been sneering about mental health on another thread, my conclusion is dick head. And I'm putting him on ignore. I suspect this is for a second time (reprieved recently for a moment of humanity on a thread, possibly). Some people....

I spent a bit of yesterday (okay too much of yesterday) trying to understand the reasoning behind the arguement that the Greens are to blame for the bush fires. This rhetoric is rife on social media over here and somewhat prevalent on this thread (I am hoping for some clarity on this soon).

I don't doubt that you are right about the far right groups but my research lead me back to Barnaby Joyce - This man:

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...-bizarre-christmas-video-20191225-p53mt4.html

One thing is for sure, For the Greens to have caused this catastrophe they must have far more power and influence than their number of seats should allow them (currently 1 in the federal parliament and 9 in the senate). It is nice to see a political party making so much out of so little. They must be good!

Although possibly I have it wrong as in politics it seems that number of seats and forming governments does not seem to equate to the being responsible for shit. Maybe winning seats just gives you first dibs on who to pass the blame onto.

not sure if your being disingenuous or not. the accusation is not the Green party but that environmental concerns has led to some policies that have exacerbated problems. its not only in Aus, also US, similar claims from some quarters. its difficult to seperate the hype from mis-information. we have on one side hotter, drier conditions blamed, on the other hand lack of scrub clearance, controlled burns, fire breaks on the other. which is at fault? probably both. its worth noting wild fires in Australia (and California) are normal, even necessary for species of tree to germinate.
