Anyone Else Hear This Extremely Encouraging Rumour Today?

I would say that we have not got any player that would get into any of the current top 6 teams. Slade didnt necessarily buy very badly but did not
buy the right mix of players in terms of temperment & other qualities. We clearly also lack decent coaching staff as well

Hmm. I'm not so sure about that first sentence - we might really have a few excellent players, but with a poor squad in general they can't exhibit their best, and they can't play up to a comparative standard.
There's a simple fact about sport - you play with better people and you will in turn get better, rising to their level.

I believe we do have some excellent talents here who struggle to shine when there's a lack of talent or general understanding, and players don't have the nous or confidence to escape their marker and combine with each other in useful passing moves.
Structurally, our squad is like a scaffolding of steel mixed with matchwood - and that effectively renders the whole thing unsound.

We said that last year and look at us now. Going down with out a fight, relying on some as yet unknown and unsigned players to keep us up. My friend who who has been to a lot of games this season went to the Leeds game yesterday (staying with the in laws) and he quite rightly said we haven't got a SINGLE player who would get into their starting eleven. That's how bad things are.

Yup. That sounds like a fair assessment.

We had barely an hours drive home last night, but it felt like a drive to Aberdeen. Very much respect to you for driving all that way - and I'll bet like me you'll keep going, but I'll also bet you're in your 40's, 50's or 60's and started watching the Albion in the Glory days. This type of football we suffered yesterday will lose us a generation (or two).

Spot on. I'm 47, with 41 years of following the Albion. I started watching some fairly average stuff in the late 60s, but the advantage then was that the Goldstone generally had a great atmosphere, and for a young kid it was FANTASTIC - even in the lower reaches of Div 3 (which, funnily enough, is where we are now!).

I'm not expecting the Glory Years again - not yet, anyway. I'd be very happy with a couple of decent seasons in League 1, and promotion to The Championship some time in the next 3 years. What I REALLY want to see is some decent football. Apart from a few odd games we really haven't seen that for about 6 years.

I don't think we'll lose a generation - they will be back when Falmer opens. And thank God. Tony Bloom says it's a legacy to his kids and grandkids - but it's actually a legacy to thousands (if not tens of thousands) of youngsters.

The problem with all this is...............which star quality player is going to come for bottom four division three football. And given we need more than one (according to this thread ) where are they all coming from. And if we're off loading the wastes of space, where are they going?Unless Mr Bloom is paying them off,of course.

And how much would that cost to pay off their contracts? even the ones whose contracts run out in June, would be looking for 6 months money. You could be looking at anywhere above quarter of a million.

You don't have to pay off their contracts. Just farm them off to Port Vale's sinking ship or the non-league and let them see out their time there. Like we did to Geoff Pitcher for YEARS

And thats if Port Vale or any club want them or they(players) want to go, if Gus wants rid of anyone and theres no takers, we'd have to pay off their contracts.

I haven`t read through all this thread so apologies if this point has been made before but why would we get rid of 15 players in january which has been suggested when it is quite obvious that most of them - if not all - will still be in contract. If another club where to come in for them and of couse take over their contracts then thats different but we would NOT get rid of players who we were still obligated to pay to at least till june would we ?

The clear out will come in the summer.................................... again.

Just seen Doan Tmatter`s post above .........doh

Well it's a load of shit really.

Firstly, nobody is going to want a bunch of half-arsed knobs who can't play football. Secondly, nobody in their right mind is going to want to come here if they are any good.

So, your first point has been proved wrong today and the second point hopefully disproved in the next couple of days.

Do we still think 15 players will leave - it's two so far!!

:clap2:

We wont get anything from our cast offs but the reduction in wages will enable us to offer a good wage for Championship standard players,we must cut out the dead wood.
Building a team around Cox might work in the Conference.

I can't see 15 leaving this month.

Poyet needs a squad that perform together and he will add a few names to the current squad and forget to renew contract in the summer.

Contracts to expire this summer:
Kuipers, El-Abd, Cox, Forster, McKleod, Livermore, Hart, Hawkins, Virgo, J.Smith
plus Brezovan if he signs till end of season

I doubt any manager would go for a major change of team at this point of the season in the position we are in. You might make those changes once/if we were safe though
