I’m all for getting back Hughton.

I’m salivating at the thought of bringing back those scintillating performances. The back-to-the-wall defending. Defenders hoofing the ball long after throwing their bodies in front of balls.

Can’t wait.

This really does show a total lack of understanding of the game of football.

Hughton was pragmatic in his first season with us in The Championship because the comparative standard of the squad was poor, the team was in trouble table wise and job number one was to stay up,

From there we added players who were better than the mean standard rather than worse and almost immediately started to win games and score goals. Lots of goals.

Then we went up and the decision was made to give most of the Championship promotion team a go at a higher standard. Almost inevitably many were not up to it and Hughton once again cut our cloth accordingly.

Now we have a squad absolutely bulging with talent. If you think Hughton would play negative hoofball with the current squad you are very, very mistaken.

I'd like to think he'd insist on a Murray style striker to put the chances away though.

And yet with the promising young players coming through and the club's excellent recruitment strategy, bringing in this impressive squad, when asked by Richard Reynolds, what the fans could expect next season, the answer was...

"More of the same"

A season and a half ago and without the recruitment of Maupay, Trossard, Lallana, Webster, Lamptey, Veltman, Moder, Welbeck and with White out on loan and Aly Mac in Argentina.

At that point Connolly was having a non-playing loan at Luton and our "excellent recruitment strategy" had yielded Locadia and Ali J.

That's EXACTLY my point,

So with the money available to him to buy those players, he still thought the best approach for Brighton was "More of the same"
Was Hughton unaware that we were tracking these players? Trossard/Webster/Maupay started in the following season, Bissouma was signed under Hughton.

I loved CH and didn't want to see him go, but IMO, he didn't buy in to Tony's vision for the club.
Maybe it's because of his time at Spurs, but I don't think he genuinely believed that we could compete in this division by playing decent football.

Sure if we brought Hughton back to manage Potter's squad, I'm sure he would play better football, but managing the transition?
I don't believe Hughton thought that was possible,

Neither did Tony, hence he replaced him.

Judging by the user name I think the OP sits behind me at the Amex. If so then this dumb thread is not really a surprise. I’m as disappointed as everyone else but I fail to see how coming on to NSC to deliberately wind up fellow Albion fans helps the situation.

I don’t think he would have played negative hoofball as the Championship team were a joy to watch, and struck a lovely balance, between defensive solidity and being incisive going forward.

The downside for Hughton for me would be having the bravery to put together a young, vibrant squad.

Would he have retained his faith in Ryan, Propper & Duffy? They would have certainly lasted longer as first teamers.

Would he have picked a rookie keeper, would he have bought in a player with less than 200 minutes premier league experience in Lamptey. I think not.

Quite possibly, yes. Fair point.

If offered Lamptey by the recruitment team I'm sure anyone would jump at the chance. Lamptey is the second best bit of business we have ever done. The best bit ever is Gross who was signed on Hughton's watch despite not having any PL experience, just having got relegated and us not normally playing a "Number 10".

Sorry, but we went backwards in that 2nd PL season under Hughton. He wouldn’t even play Bissouma, wouldn’t change shape to suit the players at his disposal, didn’t work out Burn could play left side of a 3, left back or even left wing back - even though we were weak it that department. Never got the best out of March who has flourished under Potter. It’s all a bit hypothetical, but I don’t think Alzate & Connolly would be getting a go either, or being bold and bringing Sanchez into the starting XI. He probably wouldn’t have been as negative, but wouldn’t have changed for the bigger games either.

Citing Burn as a positive after the litany of mistakes he made in the lead up to their first goal last night really isn't a good look.

Would you say we’ve gone backwards under Potters second season?

The biggest error was Dunk’s who got himself in no mans land.

Being on the front foot and pressing is no bad thing. Burn got beat but that shouldn’t have led to a goal with 2 other centre halves looking after 1 player.

Bissouma played 6 more premier League games in Hughton's last season (while he was settling) than in Potter's first season.

Caught the wrong side, fails to tackle, fails to foul, fails to block.

I'm still firmly in the Potter In camp.

He's hardly had any time at this level. He got played by Hodgson last night, fair enough. But Potter will learn. Even if we do go down, and I don't think we will, I'm still Team Potter.

All you 50+ need to go to specsavers.

I didn't think we should have sacked Hughton.

I was very vocal in my view that staying up, FA cup semi and the double over Palace, was an excellent season.

However, Hughton was wasting Tony's investment.
The value of the squad was diminishing, along with the results.

We scraped through in his last season and it was desperate and depressing watching.
Without Glenn Murray, we would have gone down.

It was the right decision.

The value of this season squad better
Agree
We r only going to scrap through this season so no change there and this is just as desperate and frustrating
And this time we are far worse off up front no Murray to save us this time
So no better off the table don’t lie
