Financial considerations generally aren't, I don't know what the significance of that comment is at all.

I'd be stunned if that is the reason, that is developer's problem not the council's.

I imagine there objection must be based on something else that will be revealed when the full report is disclosed.

Also like others I have difficulty seeing the hotel not being viable given that it is 10mins by train to the centre of Brighton without the hassle of actually finding somewhere to park it should be a roaring success.

The hotel would be very popular in my opinion, i imagine there would be considerable interest for 2 or 3 day confrences at the Amex if accommodation was on site as it were.

Do the council still own any of the land required for the hotel? If so, maybe this advice has something to do with that. I'd imagine that they are required to ensure that they get best value for any land they sell or lease for development. I'd have thought that this would just apply to their role as landlord however and be separate to the planning process.

Ahh the Greens strike again

Because they are Green, and are concerned about the Extremophile Bacteria that can be found living in the road surface of the car park.

That's two people not exactly up with current affairs.

Besides, the issues haven't reached the political stage - this is about what council officers say.

That would be perversely wonderful:

Falmer residents: "We love that beautiful stadium, please do no block our view of it."

Don't laugh - I'm told that is their opinion.

Really?
Of voting members on the Planning Committee, 4 Conservatives, 6 Labour, 2 Green. Both chair and deputy chair are Labour.

If there is some reason why this decision predates this committee structure, fair enough.
But does it?

It hasn't been voted on yet, anyway.

This is the council civil servants who recommend refusal.

Maybe they want the design of the hotel to be more in keeping with that of the stadium?

You can be sure that the Tree Hugging waste of space Lucas has put her recycled oar in somewhere!

Why on earth, are the council spending money on consultants to check the financial viability of a private firms development.

I'd imagine that they'd want to know that a project on their land is going to be worthwhile before releasing it to a private company - and that therefore they're getting a project which won't be a white elephant laying dormant for years to come when there was a possibility of the land being used for something else.

Put it this way, there'd be hell to pay if they didn't check up on it, and it went belly-up.

Hello Rachel,

Falmer Parish Council are not objecting to the hotel**application BH2015/03285. We would however like to express our disappointment with the bland architecture and bland landscaping. The stadium is**iconic in design and deserves something more special alongside it.

Best wishes.
Melanie Cutress
Chair Falmer Parish Council.

The Argus have only just picked up the story from NSC now.

However, they include this bit too: "The council has received independent advice from Crosthwaites Leisure Property Specialists who believe the development cost of a mid-range hotel makes it unviable and therefore requires the club’s subsidiary company The Community Stadium to build it at a loss."

well it should be voted through.. i mean it cant be any less viable than the i360 and at least the club are not asking the council for a loan to build it....

Why?

One - it's not in her constituency
Two - she's not on the council - she's an MP
Three - the negotiations for the hotel started while the Green Party still led the council, and therefore were happy for the council to be partners in this project (insofar as they are the landowners)
Four - the council is not Green-led any more
Five - she totally approves of, and loves the stadium, and is a big supporter of AITC and what it seeks to achieve. Therefore it's not being an enormous leap of the imagination that a much-needed hotel and cancer-treating unit would be very much welcomed
Six - the recommendation to refuse is made by officers, not councillors. The largest number of councillors represent the Labour Party.

Wow! If that is the genuine opinion of LDC then that represents quite some turnaround by the council and the chair, actually admitting that the Amex is 'iconic' and 'deserves something more special' to complement it. In the medium/long term that is good news for the hotel, just means it needs to be redesigned to be more in keeping with the sheer gorgeousness of the stadium.

Did you actually look at what the covering of the tennis courts is for ?........ i think it might be of considerable use....

I was just trying to get angry about it and using an irrational reason to be angry!

Is that not exactly what this forum is all about?
