A Thread full of War Pics.

The defending bit occurred in 1939-40 when the Russians did invade. The attacking bit happened when the Finns joined Germany with their invasion of Russia from 1941-44. You can argue that the Finns were rightfully regaining land taken away from them in 1940 but the fact that they continued well beyond those boundaries can negate this.

Unless they were reclaiming land originally taken off them by the Zsars, which I believe was the case. Didn't the Zsars see Finland as one of their states?

Sorry if this thread has caused so much offense, It was purely meant to be a "Boys Own" picture thread full of 'exciting' scenes of War time drama and 'awesome' weapons.
Jesus, everyone knows war Kills, that's why it's called WAR.
I didn't realise there were so many sensitive, sanctimonious folks out there!
I don't enjoy looking at pictures of mutilated Children, but alas some people were compelled to even the balance of my "Boys Own" series so fair enough.
I take it the same people will be picketing rememberance day celebrations, daubing paint over the Medal Of Honour games, booing as the Spitfires fly past during the Shoreham Air Show, spitting at the Veterans as they come out the British Legion, scrawling on the walls of the War Museum, arson attacks on the Tank Museum.
The same people that defaced the Staue of Churchill.
I expect we should push all these things away as they essentially glorify the War?
This is what I mean when I say War Pictures:

And in the spirit of the thread (before someone else chips in):

Dresden.

Perhaps you should have stressed the "boys own "stuff.

Personally, I reckon the thread is a fair reflection of how most of us feel, its contains some iconic pictures and haunting pics.

Tsars never took land off them, Finland was a province of Sweden up to 1812 before becoming part of Russia and even then kept both their borders and their rights within the Tsarist empire - similar to the relationship Scotland has within the United Kingdom, with the love-hate relationship that always arises with these things. The areas in question were in Karelia the bit between Finland and the White Sea. The region was peopled by Karelians a nationality related to the Finns (much like the Estonians) and nomadic Lapps who wondered around the Arctic circle chasing reindeer without caring whether they were in Norway, Sweden, Finland or Russia doing it. The underlying political ethos appears to have been once regaining land taken by the Soviets in 1940 the army should push on and get the Karelians to join the Finnish nation. Though the Finns were always canny enough between 1941-44 to drop these ideas if American public opinion showed anysigns of distaste which they duly did after the Germans suffered reverses at Stalingrad and Kursk.

Whilst the Finns were boxed into a corner and had to make decisions according to their more powerful neighbours they still had some leeway to make the decisions they did.

I bow to your better knowledge here, but you still refer to Finland becoming a part of Russia, which i imagine did not go down well?

Bear in mind that the province was run by Aristocratic Swedes prior to Russian annexation and that Swedish remained the language of government until the 1860s when the Tsar actually ordered the change to Finnish. The Tsar bought them off by allowing the Finnish ruling class to retain their privileges, the Finns always fearful that they may be removed dutifully obeyed and this worked for most of the 19th century. What killed it was trade and industry, the Finns being the most westernized of the Tsarist provinces were annoyed that the money they were making were going either to the local aristocrats or the Tsar and that neither were capable of running a modern industrial nation. Consequently, the Finns believed that the only people who could adequately control their own destiny was themselves and began adgitating for independence which therefore bought Tsarist repression.

At the outbreak of the First World War many people couldn't wait to sign up as they thought they were off to a football match. They didn't have the same sort of reporting and media access as we do now.

Though its not nice and often quite vile some of the photos here might help convince some of the more Gung Ho people in the world that war is anything but a game.

Frankly anyone who was offended about the photos here should have not opened the thread. Pictures glorifing war are very dangerous IMHO.
