How many of you told/laughed at Irish jokes in the 70's. Did you try and link them to the alienation of Irish in Britain and the IRA bombing campaign? Probably not, because they were funny and didn't really add to the problem.

No idea why people are so different in their tune now.

How I laughed at those jokes. They were pretty much the same as the Kerry man jokes told in Ireland at the same time.

Look, you don't find it funny. Okay, just say that. Don't start trying to pull it apart because in the literal sense it doesn't compute...
But jokes do mean something.

I can't believe you would defend the parcel joke though Buzzer? What does this joke say? It says quite simply that all Muslims are bombers, even those sitting around at a birthday party. It's a joke designed to inspire hatred and contempt for all Muslims.

Now the veil joke is no where near as offensive as that, granted. That just says it's difficult to communicate with Muslim women who wear such veils. It isn't actually, but as an example of spreading some ignorance and distrust of Muslims, it's pretty mild and no doubt even some very self-confident Muslims would find it mildy funny too.

Some feel very uncomfortable that these jokes feed into a climate of prejudice and ignorance against Muslims and that's worrying given the documented rising tide of racist attacks against Muslims we are currently seeing.

Many others on these thread don't see that such a connection exists. We'll only get some kind of clue on that if we discuss the issue and bravo to Hungry Joe for having the guts to ask the difficult questions.

It's quite simple the way I see it! If you don't like the jokes on this thread f**k off & start your own joke thread!

A joke is just a joke, A little light hearted humour to help break up the depression of major issues that do happen in life. When it gets to the stage of people having to justify having a sense of humour then the world is in a very sorry state.

IT'S A JOKE THAT EVERYONE BUT THE MOST PEDANTIC PERSON WOULD UNDERSTAND IN IT'S ENTIRETY.

I'm not saying they'd all find it funny but.....

Are you really that literal in your thought processes?

I don't think so as you stated above in answer to a point by me that you typed people and meant one person in particular. Now, you've either got to accept that one can type one thing and a reasonable person might just understand the intention behind it or we can follow your current line of the most pedantic thought and take everything absolutely literally.

Either way, you can't hide behind your statement that you typed about people being thick when you meant one person in particular.

I hope this makes sense. Basically, you're just as guilty as the rest of us of typing things that, if taken literally, are untrue.

Look, you don't find it funny. Okay, just say that. Don't start trying to pull it apart because in the literal sense it doesn't compute...

As Rowan Atkinson said "every joke has a victim".

Couldn't have put it better myself.....

I'm not hiding behind anything and I will continue to pull these 'jokes' apart for the reason that if it makes just one person think a bit more about the bigger picture and worrying context within which these jokes are told and passed around then it will be worth it. It's the easiest thing in the world just to laugh along with the crowd for fear of being seen as different and ridiculed for it. Attacks on Muslim women have increased since this debate was launched in the media and became part of the public conciousness. That is statistically proven. The innocent people of any kind of irrational hatred or violence are the real victims of a comedy or public that either sees them as fair game or stays silent. The Nazi party used anti-jewish humour as propaganda. Comedy isn't always an innocent bystander that cannot be held to account. I'm a Libertarian who is anti-censorship and totally for freedom of speach but that freedom comes with a responsibility to protect minorities and individuals from persecution, whatever form that persecution takes. We are all living in an increasing climate of fear and I honestly believe these so called innocent jokes are making it worse not better. If you like them and find them funny you have the right to laugh and say so on here. I have the right to pull them apart and voice my concerns also.

...and I put it to you that you are not pro-freedom of speech but for censorship and therefore not a libertarian.

I found the joke funny (the first one), got the second one but it was so-so. I am more than happy for people to tell those jokes and in return tell jokes about my race, religion as long as we all support each other against the nasty bigots of this world.

I bet every single person who found the joke funny on this thread would rise up against those that want to physically attack women in veils. We all know the difference between a joke and a calculated hate crime. That's us acting responsibly and we don't need you to dictate what we can and can't say.

Youngsters however are banned from wearing their hoddies in towns etc. They could be following hoodism. Tell me the difference.

Very simple, there is a fear that gangs of hoodies commit acts of anti-social disorder in town centres (how true that fear is, is actually another interesting debate). Now when was the last time you saw gangs of veiled women going round harrassing people or picking on vulnerable people.

Yet still people are still having a go at veiled women, as if somehow they are harming someone. How does that work again?

No it isn't. Do you accept that racist jokes exist? And that is is generally not a good idea to tell them?

On your first point you're wrong, I am exactly that. I have not once said "you can't say or do that", I've just criticised what has been said where I see fit. That is freedom of speach.

On your second point, fair enough.

On your last, I wish that were true but if you read the posts of algie (along with his signature) and a couple of the others I think you'll see that some people are more than happy to either act out or support such actions. I'm not dictating anything.

The same way you cannot walk into a bank wearing a motorcycle helmet because you are HIDING YOUR IDENTITY and authorities would be unable to identify you if you were to carry out a crime. It is very simple...

So i'm not allowed to view my thoughts in my signature because they don't support your way of thinking? If it was offensive then surely the mods would of spoken to me about it?

Hang on LI you agreed with me that this joke was being told 20-30 years ago about the Irish so how could it be designed to inspire hatred towards muslims?

I've seen muslims including veiled women protesting on our streets going far beyond what would tolerated by a christian march.

On the ocean wave
South Africa during Apartheid.

3 guys in a prison cell, 2 white, 1 black.
1 white asks the other, what did you do & how long have you got?
"I raped a black woman & got 6 months."
"6 months for raping a kefir? That's a bit much?"
"I'll be out in 4 with good behaviour."

That white guy then asks the other white guy the same question.
"I murdered a black boy & got 1 year".
"A year for a kefir? That's very steep?"
"Yes, but I'll be out in 10 months with good behaviour".

Then the white guys turn to the black guy who is manacled to the wall.
"What are you in for kefir & how long?"
"I got life for having no lights on my bicycle!"
"Life? That's a bit much!"
"They would of f***ing hung me if it was dark!"

(Smudge would like to confirm that no-one in this gag were wearing veils).
