If people on NSC constantly riduculed you for being - oh, I dunno - a thick-headed right-wing neanderthal (just a random example, like), some of it would eventually stick. Would you find that funny?

What if that prejudice - right or wrong - affected your job? Your income? Your home life? Your relationships?

Still funny? Still laughing it off?
Algie gets that all the time, if you scroll back a few pages there's some abuse on this thread, I don't see him crying about it.

The trouble with people like butchy is that they see Muslims as one big homogenous group. My friend Nav drinks, takes drugs, doesn't fast at Ramadan, has a white girlfriend, hates religous intollerence of any kind, goes clubbing, makes me laugh etc etc etc. He is not unusual for a young British Muslim. Where do he and those like him fit into butchy's and algie's world? My guess is that they probably would rather pretend they don't exist than face up to their own ridiculous prejudice and ignorance.

Just to get this right, he drinks, takes drugs, doesn't fast. This is in the face of the Islamic Faith, so how can he call himself a Muslim. Its not disagreeing with just part of his faith but most of it! One of their main beliefs is that you keep your mind pure of any influencing drugs. It appears he doesn't.

See this is where it all goes wrong. I do not go around calling myself or proclaiming to be christian. I'm British, English and a Sussex man. Simple. It sounds like he practices his faith about as much as mine. Therefore he's not a muslim, but a young british man.

But he was born into the Muslim faith as you and I were born into the Christian faith. To Islamic extremists we are no different from practicising Christians, to Xenophobes who just see his skin and appearance he is no different to any other Muslim. Having been out with him a lot I've seen first hand the discrimination he's subjected too, most of it pretty subtle but unpleasant and disconcerting all the same. Try to imagine what it's like being born and bread British but walking into pubs and getting the vast majority of people in them starring at you with distrust.

I'm a bit fickle actually, I've already moved on to fantasise about peeling off the many layers of the Respect Party's leading Muslim leftwing firebrand Salma Yaqoob

By the time you'd finished discussing the right's & wrong's of sleeping with one of them they'd have lost interest anyway!

I think this is why the government are trying to loose the veil. Integration my dear fella. It is disgusting that people should treat him any different.

Yes it is but why should we give into discrimination and make people change their appearance so we feel more comfortable around them, surely that's missing the point. The way forward is to educate people into realising that wearing a veil doesn't make you a threat or any less a modern Britain than not. Integration should not mean losing individual identity completely. He dresses the same as most young men his age, doesn't even have a beard, just looks obviously Asian. Yet still he gets this shit. I shudder to think what would happen if he walked into some of the pubs and clubs round here in traditional Muslim garb. But he should be able to if he wanted to.

Not siding with discrimination, but people changing is different,
because their parents decided to live in a non Muslim country? They must respect that to some extent. Can you walk around in an England shirt, shorts (or just showing legs / ankles if a women) and wear Nike trainers in all eastern European Countries with no problems?

Probably not but I wasn't born and raised there. We've had people in trad Muslim dress here for decades yet it's only been a major problem that even the Govt feel they have to get involved with in the last couple of years. To spread fear, instability and intollerance is the ultimate aim of terrorism yet we are slowly giving into it.

Well that depends where you live, Birmingham had race riots back in the 80s and plenty of other non intergrated areas haven't seen eye to eye for a long time.

Indeed but the riots weren't over what people were wearing or weather they were seen as a trrorist threat or not. Different issues, important all the same but different.

Then why cant we educate people into realising my sons wearing a hoodie does'nt make them criminals, or me walking off the beach wearing a balaclava when i've been fishing in winter does'nt mean i'm gonna hold up a bank? I think next time I go out i'm gonna wear a veil & see how i get on with that!

I agree, it's all intollerance of a sort. The difference with hoodies though as LI pointed out earlier is that there is a link with the wearing of them by groups of teenagers and anti-social behaviour. How many acts of terror and violence have been commited by women wearing veils in this country? Agreed some of them haven't done themselves any favours during recent protests but aside from that how can they be seen as a threat?

Freedom of speech is just that. FREEDOM. and Joe never called for regulation.

Please, people, we stop free speech at our peril.
