17000 and rising.

Without wishing to belittle 9/11, it kind of puts that in perspective.

Next time you find yourself worrying about the miniscule chance of being caught in a terrorist bomb because politicians keep doing their best to scare us all, it'll be worth remembering that far more devastating things can happen without any warning.

It appears that USA scientists could see this happening (the earth quake) prior to the tidal waves but did not know who to contact.

In this day and age you'd think we could all communicate better.

I heard that in the Pacific where this kind of thing is common place (the underground earthquakes and resulting tidal waves not thousands dying) there is an early warning system in place. This results in the ability to warn people in adavnce of the earthquake and tidal waves. However the system for the Indian Ocean is still being developed and installed.

i heard that too. Now, maybe I'm dumb, but I think I might have at least phoned the police in that country. Bound to be someone who speaks English, who would obivously know about their emergency plans and who to inform.

Sadly, I really tend to think that the USA doesn't give a shit.

I think that is a bit harsh, more a case of no plan of action in place for when this type of tragedy strikes.

Also need to remember when this happened. Mother nature does not respect that it is a public holiday and that the people that are able to organise a evacuation might be at home with their familys.

Maybe harsh. But then if I had several hours warning that a huge earthquake had taken place and was therefore likely to have unleashed devastating tsunamis on the nearest countries, I think I might have tried to warn them..... even if it meant phoning a few of the wrong people first.

21,000 now.

It will probably be 50,000 and I thought this yetserday.

No numbers for Burma and Bangladesh, Sumatra (Indonesia) few from Malaysia.

In Bangladesh, the fishermen and villagers may already have been drowned in previous floods?

Estimates of 11,000 dead now. I can't recall any other natural disaster causing as much death and destruction on this kind of scale, not in recent times anyway.
Amazing how quick we are to forget. 26000 were killed by an earthquake in Bam last Boxing Day. I only remember because I saw it on TV the other day.

The survivors will not forget!

My granny (Granny Blount) said that there was a tidal wave between the wars on Hove beach. This could have been 1931 (don't know for sure).

Lots of people running up the shingle and drowned deckchairs.

Er... I'm sure they were quite capable of calling someone.

I think what they meant is, they don't know the correct protocol.

In a position like that you can't call people in a foreign country at random. I mean, what if you get it wrong?!

PS: In the same year, floods in China killed millions (literally) of Chinese people. But it wasn't on the television.

You really are a complete bell end. As well as costing the club another 30 grand with having to pick holes in your lunatic site for the stadium, you now belittle the tragedy with shite like this.

Tidal wave hit

It seems that tsunamis have only previously killed a few dozen people, although some of these were Americans, well Hawaians.

After several days of successive bombing in Afghanistan there was a break from the bombing and then there was an earthquake, but it did not make the news.

Worthing
Watching in horror. I was there (Sri Lanka!) in October. I have seen the hotel where I stayed on the news tonight, water gushing into the pool. Everyone survived apparantly.

We drove down the coast road from Columbo to Galle, right through the devisated area.

Thailand looked much worse. I hope my little bar, (in Ao Nang) is OK!

Terrible
