i heard that too. Now, maybe I'm dumb, but I think I might have at least phoned the police in that country. Bound to be someone who speaks English, who would obivously know about their emergency plans and who to inform.

Sadly, I really tend to think that the USA doesn't give a shit.

Can a few of you just stop blaming the Americans for everything. And bringing it into the thread and other little silly things eg Perseus, this incident is very tragic, and my thoughts are with the poor unfortunate people in the areas that have been hit.

I don't blame the Americans for everything, and comparing it with Perseus's stupid comment is crass. My thoughts are very much with the people in the area - that's exactly why I think it's sad that the richer countries in the West don't do more to help poorer nations be prepared when the technology exists, rather than just help with an emergency response once it's too late.

And for those that think I'm being over-harsh about the Americans ... well, Radio 5 also seem to have spent most of the afternoon trying to get to the bottom of why some sort of warning wasn't given.

Well that makes all this OK then, doesn't it?

Using a tragedy to make a political point. You really are a sad little man. :nono:

If I wanted to make a political point, I would say that for the moment the EU have offered for humanitarian help is about the cost of four cruise missiles.

It is still just a fact; you have to draw your own inferences.

The Alaskan tidal wave in 1964 took ten hours or so to reach Hawai, which is a much longer time to send out a warning.

Addenda: it took 8 hours to reach Sri Lanka and Thailand.

On Radio Five, somebody mentioned mud slides in the North Sea. The commentators, doubtless feeling safe in England, did not seem to know what the contributor was on about.

The thing is the North Sea is made up of mud. If there was a biggish earthquake off the Norwegian coast, there could be a massive mud slide sending a tidal wave that could swamp lowland Scotland.

This is the Storegga slide which has not happened for seven thousand years or so. And only really big 26 thousand years ago.

There is a difference between BLAMING them and asking awkward and important questions so that in future things can be done better.

I think anyone that can't grasp that difference is the :jester: quite frankly.

Warning Systems:

I am not so sure that even in a technological country like Britain, a warning could work in two hours for a once in a century event.
After a dozen false alarms, people would get complacent.

Did anybody else find the BBC South East news item this evening totally out of proportion?

A local travel agent complaining that he couldn't get information out of the Foreign Office about the small group of tourists he had sent off on a package holiday. Apparently he'd had to phone the resort direct and even then had found it impossible to get the information he wanted. The news angle was that the Foreign Office helpline was "pointless".

I'm sorry, but with hundreds of thousands of displaced people (possibly millions), the tourist industry can't be given the priority it thinks it deserves. What next? 'Watchdog' programmes blaming Thomas Cook for "ruining my holiday".

The sheer scale of the earthquake and resulting waves are just beyond belief.
Unfortunately it isn't over yet because there will probably be after shocks and then possibly cholera outbreaks because of lack of clean water.
