My original headline says 1,000. Now they are talking 55,000. The destructive power of nature is simply horrific.

Correction: I have just calculated that it took eight hours for the tidal wave to reach Sri Lanka, so they could have had an "early warning system".

The earthquake occurred at midnight and ther tidal wave hit without warning at 8 o'clock in the morning (GMT).

The time of the day in Sri Lanka would be about six or seven hours later.

I expect you knew that already. The time it took was incorrectly reported on some early news reports.

Simon Boxall from Southampton Oceanography has just reiterated on BBC1 that the time span from earthqualke to tidal wave in the Indian Ocean is only three hours, less one hour for analysis = two hours.

So my calculations in an earlier message may be wrong. I have not double-checked the time variations. UT = GMT.

50K - it will get worse - more like 80K.

50 - 80K = a town like Crawley completely obliterated.:( :( :(

I have been in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia in the past 8 months and near enough all the places i have been to have been hit. Sri Lanka seems to have been shat on. On the south coast near Galle everyone lives within 5 kms of the beach. They live in small wooden houses that a gale would blow down let alone 20m waves. Its shocking. The aftermath will be worse. I reckon near enough 250k people will die due to this.

Everyone should donate something - however much or little. If everyone in the western world did so this tragedy can be helped and thousands of lives can be saved.

RIP

Will
