10 obscure ways to identify a Brightonian

Since I live in London now? Am I still a Brightonian? I still see my Brighton as my home town, It is where I am FROM. And I support the Albion and not ASrsenal, West ham etc

Remember when
  • There was a zoo at Withdean where the stadium now is
  • All the Southdown buses used Pool Valley
  • There were Pantomimes at the Hippodrome every winter
  • The Brighton Tigers were in town
  • The Southdown coaches used to line up on Marine Drive near the Palace Pier every weekend with boards out front advertising their excursions ... "Mystery Drive" for example

Those were the days ... sigh

Of course you are. I've not lived permanently in Brighton since 1989, but its still my home town.

Old Brightonians still give directions urging you to go straight up past Hanningtons and turn left at Vokins.

They will also remember the concrete carbuncle that was the old Churchill Square, the hideous sculpture that used to be in the square itself, the scary car parks, and the nasty old Tesco that used to be right at the back.

Remember when we used to have things called pubs instead of "bars". They had names like The Bosun, The Lamb & Flag, The William Tell & The Cranbourne. (To name but a few).

10. After a long Journey, when they pass the pylons on the A23, they feel like they are home.

Used to drive my then g/f now wife mad by patriotically bellowing Good Old Sussex by the Sea at the top of my voice when returning to Brighton, while exiled in London in the 80's.

But then you really *knew* that you had come home again.

Ahh Corporation buses, how very working class that sounds!! My favourite was the number 11 from Hangleton into Brighton taking in the posh houses around Hove Park and Dyke Road enroute.

Loved the colour of these old buses

The William Tell used to be my local even though I lived in Whitehawk , after leaving home and before moving back in with my Dad I stayed in Bed & Breakfast above the Cat & Cucumber which was on the other side of Queens Road and only 20 yards away from the pub. For 3 months before starting work at BT I used to work in the restaurant kitchen above the William Tell which was called the Swiss Restaurant and do the occassional shift on a Friday night downstairs behind the bar. Does anyone remember Johnny Diamond who used to DJ on a Friday and Saturday night (Sunday night at the Cliftonville ?)

I remember the Leyland Alanteans (sp?) very well from when I was a wee lad. My mum used to take me on the number 42 to school around Queens Park.
