'ooh let's try to annoy Simon Cowell by buying a Rage tune which in turn makes more people buy the X Factor tune and gets him some more money'

Yea, I bet he's REALLY pissed off.

f***ing IDIOTS.

I agree Max. In fact I hope X-Factor get Xmas number one just to piss these people off. Let's start a campaign to try and get people who don't like cynical RATM marketing ploy to buy the X-factor song instead, we could even start a Facebook group.
Actually let's not, only a f***ing idiot would do such a thing

what are you on about, it's made all the difference? it'll be fairly interesting to see how far this thing actually goes and to be honest i think there are enough people out there who dislike simon cowell to warrent a number one spot, which is basically what this whole thing comes down to. hate.

If (when) the X Factor winner is Xmas No.1, it will have made no difference.

Also I don't get the significance of RATM, other than that it's a shouty sweary track which is kind of different to most Christmas singles from that list of the last 20 odd years of Christmas number ones. It seems to me as if some angry teenager with every Rage album in his CD collection decided to kick up a fuss and get his favourite band some hype in the absence of the band themselves actually doing anything to warrant attention.

I suppose the line "f*** you I won't do what you tell me" is kind of like a snipe at the overcommercialised Cowell-fuelled pop industry but other than that it's hardly the "anti-Christmas" which is surely what the scheme really calls for. In fact you could argue that this has already been achieved with the Pogues' Christmas song which doesn't fit the stereotype and yet makes a fortune from Christmas royalties each year.

I think to really beat the X Factor brigade at their own game a massive viral campaign showing the plight of some poor, dying young girl whose family have all died in tragic circumstances would be the best course of action. Her last dying wish to make it to Christmas number one, in a nod to all the overemotional scenes in X Factor auditions when some plucky upstart struggles through grief and heartache to make it one round further before disappearing once the tug on the heartstrings story has been told.

Now THAT, that might have worked.

This however just looks like an excuse for "alternative" oiks all over the land to squeal with delight at their parents on Christmas morning that the word f*** is used in the song that's made it to Christmas number one, meaning it's officially ok to say it at the dinner table over the Turkey with granny.

My prediction: I don't care

unfortunately, chappers, this is exactly what the majority of people are.

to be honest i quite liked the idea but the execution has been piss-poor.

What do you mean 'the execution'? It was a facebook group started by a couple of guys, which currently has over 500k members and has attracted an absolute shit load of media attention. They had absolutely no idea when they started it that it would garner such attention. What exactly has been piss-poor about it?

Ultimately, it's about people pissed off with x factor and their complete domination of the charts trying to do something about it. I accept that it probably isn't the best way to go about it, or that it's not really even that much of a cause, but at least they are trying to do something about an issue that they care about. I don't see why that warrants such abuse or dismissal. Fair play to them I say.

Ahem...

For this campaign to have worked you'd need to release a track with proceeds going to a charity as a big two fingers up at Simon Cowell and co. instead of promoting an old song from a back catalogue belonging ultimately to Sony Records.

:clap2::clap2:

Probably the same idiots that started the 'Hallelujah' campaign last year by getting people to buy the original which turned out that the rights had been bought by Simon Cowell! So he cashed in twice. There are some gullible looneys out there!

If you like either record buy it, simples. Don't be led by the mob :)

granted they probably didn't know how mental it would get but in hindsight it would have been nice to pick a less predictable song with a charitable cause. or anything that doesn't involve simon cowell!

obviously in hindsight that's very easy for me to say. :p

Whoah, slow down everyone, it was only meant as a bit of fun. If you're not keen then, hey, don't bother.

It is old.

It hasn't been re-released.

These kids just chose it for reasons I can only speculate to, as I have done above.

In the internet era with downloads counting towards chart positions any song has a chance of making it into the chart regardless of its age and release date.

Rage Against The Machine, while being WIKID, were the most "to a formula" band that has ever existed.

It is old.

Surely not! I bought it the day it came out - & I could've sworn it was only last year or so..

ps Does my original RATM purchase count towards the Christmas No 1 bid? If not, I might just start kickin-off in South-Central Hove izzit. To HELL with Coffee Mornings: & I jolly well won't be doing what Daphne suggests, thank you very much. 'Ballet In The Head' the lot of them. Marvelous!
