The McGhee handbook states that we do not need specialist full backs, just shove a couple of your favourites in there, if their preferred position is already filled, it is not like it will cost us.

Nope, the Dick Knight/board handbook says we can't potentially waste lots of money and overpay on these positions when there are more key positions to fill in the squad. McGhee is just making the best of that bad situation and getting undue criticism for it.

It is not that easy. We don't have two specialist in each position. Could we afford to keep Lynch, El-Abd, Breach, Elphick, Butters & Hinsh and have specialists? We have to use what we have and if that means fitting square pegs in round holes, then so be it.
Or we could just sign someone. 5 of those players are fresh out of the youth team, they get paid in penny sweets and mars bars so I don't believe that we can't afford it. I also don't believe that there is not a player in existance who can play to the desired standard in that position.

Well either there is no budget, he does not know what he is doing, he is going to pull something amazing out of the bag (have to have one unlikely option) or he has given up caring, as the season is in 10 days and he seems to have no idea about who are best team is.

Still the more he messes things up now, the quicker he can go.

Full backs are one of the most important spots in the team - just look at last year.

Well, with more performances like last night and you are going to be whistling for that for a long time.

More important than getting Brittain in? Or getting someone in like Dichio? Hard choices I'm afraid - it's not perfect, but it is Brighton.

I doubt it very much. We won, but the reports suggest the defence was shakey and they hit the woodwork a couple of times.

Still churning through trialists 10 days before the season, fair enough some are not good enough, but on the one hand to be saying we want this player and then 48 hours doing the opposite is very McGhee.

You are right, however getting two full backs in would make the defence a tight unit again, which i think is going to be key this year.

That woodwork was in one move, so one missed chance really by them. We also hit the bar and missed two one-on-one with keepers. I know it's disappointing for you, but we played reasonably well beating a Championship team.

I want Brighton to do well, I have always wanted that, however at present I want McGhee out of this club so in the short term if these means having to put up with some negative results then so be it.

That is probably because you have only known me for the last couple of years and McGhee has been incharge.

I actually think Coppell is one of the best we have ever had, Taylor well history now shows him in a far more favourable light and Adams, well I liked him as he brought some passion back and turned things around.

In fairness the only 2 I have really disliked have been McGhee and Lloyd.

I think McGhee would love to have the funds to go out and buy specialists. But back to reality - last time in 2003/4 he had the same problem.

He solved it by promoting a centre-back Virgo to play at right-back. And a left-sided midfielder Harding to play at left-back. That defence ended up among the meanest in the league.

That solution in 2004/4 was all somewhat contrary to Uncle Buck's very hidebound views on players (even developing young players it seems) never straying from one set position.

What I think helps us is that we are playing at League 1 level again rather than the murderous standard of the Championship, where we couldn't realistically compete. I come back again to last night, Colchester are realistically a good League 1 club and our young players did not look out of their depth - this is very encouraging.

Maybe that is the case, however Harding was at the club then so only had the fill in at right back, And while Reid is a good right back what if he is needed in midfield? and I really dont rate Hart as a right back at all.

2003/04 Coppell started by using Jones at left wing back and then when went 4-4-2 Mayo played at left back. Watson played on the right. It changed under McGhee, due to Harding's emergence and the fact Watson was injured and so Virgo was used there. At the beginning of the following season McGhee started with those 2, but then Virgo was move up front and I am struggling to think who played in the full back position, I think it might have been Hinsh (oh another centre back).

The thing is this year we do have Mayo and Rents as left backs and Paul Hinshlewood is a right back and Breach has certainly played there and at present seems to lack a definied position, yet McGhee will as ever shoe horn his favourites in there.
