The posh bit
A post on the local paper website:

This whole saga is making PFC sound more and more like an old and decrepid family pet. You can't put it down because the kids will be upset, but the vet bills are just getting too much. It's been mauled by other dogs down the park repeatedly, its kidneys are shot, most of its hair has fallen out, and the broken leg it incurred a few years back has never healed properly. But you just can't say goodbye, because of all the happy memories it's given you.
Sorry for the pessimistic metaphor, but perhaps the time has come to put it down, and invest in a new puppy who'll dump in the house, and generally be rubbish for a bit, but just might in time help us forget about all the good times the old mutt has given. It's just too riddled with worms.

Almost makes you feel sorry for them. Almost ...

Very good summery but a sack and a lake for the proverbial unwanted pet is best I feel....

10 new players ?

By Neil Allen
Published on Thursday 16 August 2012 11:00

Pompey are seeking to sign up to 10 new players during the next 48 hours as they bid to become competitive for the start of the league season.

Administrator Trevor Birch has given Blues boss Michael Appleton the go-ahead to offer all eight of his triallists monthly contracts.

In addition, other targets not currently training with the club could also be brought in to feature against Bournemouth in Saturday’s League One opener.

Birch insists Pompey can afford the monthly contracts, despite the on-going financial problems and Portpin pulling out of a takeover.

And the administrator also believes it will not represent a risk to the players.

Should Pompey be liquidated, the players will be allowed to sign for other clubs – even outside the transfer window.

Appleton’s first action will be to tie down the likes of Brian Howard, Izale McLeod, Mustapha Dumbuya, Jon Harley, Luke Rodgers, Jack Compton, Kieran Djilali and Liam Walker.

In addition, the non-contract terms of keeper Simon Eastwood can now be turned into a monthly deal.

The good news comes with the backdrop of the Pompey Supporters’ Trust’s on-going talks to buy the club out of administration and safeguard its future.

In the meantime, Appleton will be making crucial progress on strengthening his playing squad for the League One season ahead.

Birch said: ‘We can sign players and are attempting to sign them between now and Saturday – but only on a monthly contract.

‘That means there is no liability for the club.

‘And it can afford to employ them on such terms during administration.

‘We are trying to get as many as we can, perhaps eight, nine or 10 players.

‘These players have a lot of confidence in the club and what Michael is trying to achieve here.

‘The fact they are prepared to sign on a monthly basis shows that.

‘I am getting lots of phone calls from players and agents of players who want to come here for nothing.

‘This club is attractive to players. In return, they will be getting regular football and will be paid every month.

‘That is what all players want.

‘For the players there is no risk.

‘If the club is liquidated they will be able to move to another club, even if it is outside the transfer window.

‘And even in administration they will be paid under the terms of their monthly contract.

‘These players are prepared to come to us on that basis and it shows tremendous faith in what we are attempting to achieve here.’

Players will also be told permanent contracts will kick in once a new owner arrives.

Pompey hope that will convince them to remain at Fratton Park despite interest from other clubs.

Aside from the current triallists, Appleton has lined-up a number of other players.

These have remained in constant touch with the Blues boss during the summer.

But it remains to be seen whether all players offered terms will accept.

Pompey have little room for negotiation while the club’s future remains uncertain

The BBC's version .................

Portsmouth are to start the process of rebuilding their squad for the new season and could bring in as many as 10 new players by the weekend.

Pompey are currently in administration and will start the League One season on minus 10 points. All their senior players left the club in the summer.

On Tuesday they fielded a near-youth team at Plymouth in the League Cup.

But administrators PKF have confirmed to BBC Sport the club will bring players in on one-month contracts.

Those players will include keeper Simon Eastwood, who was brought in on a non-contract basis earlier in the week.

Other players expected to sign are trialists Izale McLeod, Mustapha Dumbuya, Jon Harley, Luke Rodgers, Brian Howard, Jack Compton, Kieran Djilali and Liam Walker.

Manager Michael Appleton has been working hard throughout the summer to rebuild his squad, but has been frustrated in his attempts to offer players contracts as the club search for new owners.

In total 10 senior players left Fratton Park in the summer but as yet no-one new, bar Eastwood, has been brought in.

On Tuesday, Pompey were beaten 3-0, with Eastwood and 35-year-old assistant coach Ashley Westwood the only players over 21.

The Pompey Supporters Trust (PST) is currently in talks with administrator Trevor Birch as it attempts to take control of the stricken club, who are £58m in debt.

Former owner Balram Chainrai withdrew his bid on Wednesday, leaving the PST in pole position to take over.

It was feared Pompey would have to start the season against Bournemouth with the same youth team that played on Tuesday, but they could be set to field a more experienced side.

Am I missing something?

How can they bring in players when nobody owns the club, also do they get another 15 point deduction for being in admin at the start of the season?

Somewhere over there...
Portsmouth are given special dispensation by the Football League to start the season on zero points, despite being in administration. Football League rules state that clubs who begin a season in administration start on -10 points, but Pompey will now be penalised as and when they exit administration.

"The League will continue working with the administrator in an effort to secure the future of the club," the Football League says in a statement.

Its a complete irrelevance to be honest. there's a 12 month limit for operating in administartion, so they have to exit admin in the next 3 months. When they do, they'll have the 10pts deducted. The table will just be a little bit misleading until then.

But what's the point?

As I understood it, the rules were that there is a 10 pt deduction if a team doesn't exit administration before the season starts. Why change from that, if, as you say, the 10pt deduction this season is inevitable at some point.

There is no point. As I say - its irrelevant.

Unless the administrator thinks that a mid-table team (with an as yet implemented penalty) is easier to market to potential investors, than one in the League One relegation zone.

Strange isn't it. Surely any potential investor can work out where -10 pts will take them in the table .... then again, looking at the state of football finances, maybe their maths isn't up to that.

I imagine that they would intimate to those prospective investors, that the penalty was not set in stone, and that they would be looking for ways to appeal against it.

That's what I fear, that this is step one towards the FL saying "oh let 'em off that, they already suffered enough."

So much for us taking a leaf out of the Scots book.

Or possibly a way of being able to increase it when they do - ala Plymouth / Bournemouth / Luton
