No, the most violent the police got was hitting Alfie Meadows over the head with a batton, which resulted in a life threatening injury which needed brain surgery. Alfie Meadows was attacked, unprovoked. When he got the the hospital, the police tried to send him to a different hospital as they did not want him being treated in the same hospital as police. This could have cost Alfie his life, but thankfully the ambulance man who took him to the hospital refused this.

There were some people there intent on violence (small minority), which explains the pool balls. The vast majority of students protesting were peaceful. The same cannot be said for the police.

Here's the dilemma for the Police, do they wait until they are attacked or should they be pro active ? How are the Police supposed to be able to tell who's peaceful and who isn't ? Anyway at the end of the day it's all a waste of time and money as there's no way the government to back down. No matter what the students can do they are unlike a trade union when a strike can stop the country. Who cares if they want to march ? Who cares if they want to sit in their universities ? Believe me the NUS is sadly mistaken if they believe that the majority supports them, it doesn't and it will not be improved if the students try to inconvenience the general public. They can rant all they like but it won't do anything.

The students have had their fun, an excuse to smash some things up in the name of their "cause". Won't be long now until they realise it really won't make much difference whatsoever and they go back to pissing their loans up the wall.

Care to provide the evidence for those accusations ? I concede it's unfortunate someone was injured but given the provocation of the police by some protesters I'm surprised there weren't any more serious injuries - especially to the police officers.

As bhaexpress says - what were the police to do in such instances ? They had no choice to be there - the protesters went to what was obviously going to be a confrontational demo of their own free will.

I'm feeling sorry for the Police on this one. Last thing they want to be seen as an agent of the state in it's pursuit of cuts.

.. especially as they will suffer from them themselves.

During flash points of sustained violence at the police on a line during a protest the water is muddied. You should however select targets for the batton based on a calculated threat. A protester with his hands up isn't going to do anything. A protester reaching i to his pocket right in front of you might be getting ready to throw something. A women in a wheelchair has the threat level of f*** all. A bit of common sense and soem kind of threat assesment based on a standard drilled in during training might be needed (because its not showing its existance if it is already in the trianing prorgram)

Herding protesters on to a bridge from 8pm till 10:45 when the rioters have left through another exit and/or been arrested however is clearly just a pisstake, THEN the maze they made us go thorugh, the crush because of the lack of conversation. Had there have been some kind of propper surge/crush then with no wehre to go it'd been a really dangerous situation.

Ever crossed your mind that all you friendly little students are getting in the way of ordinary folk who are just going about their business ? I don't mind the Police moving any obstruction out of my way.

Bollocks. f***ing bollocks.

My step-daughter has a degree in Technical & Stage Management, as has her partner, and both have managed to get fairly decent jobs in fairly short order the back of it in the world of the Arts. Who the f*** are you to undermine those degrees principally because they're not in commerce or law or medicine - or more pertinently undermine them because you don't know what those degrees entail?

Yes it has, thats why we are doing it?

Ever crossed YOUR mind that the whole idea of a demonstration is to bring things to a stop, get in the way and get heard?

I think the concept of a protest or a demo has gone way over your head. If we didn't disrupt people but sat about in a feild out of town, who'd listen? who'd find out about what we're doing? Out of sight, out of mind.

Sorry but thats how a protest works.

This. I've spoken to people with Media degrees and arts degrees and who are SO f***ing talented they can make a whole career out of something that is "useless", get a f*** load of cash and when it gets taxed they end up contributing more than if they DIDN'T go to Uni.

Its all very well and good looking at a degree title and thinking "useless" if you have no idea what it entails. There is more to life, and more to education than just law medicine or commerce.

All these impoverished working class victims being landed with life-destroying debts to pay for their education might like to bear in mind that they are being asked to pay no more than the price of this small secondhand car.

If they don't think it's worth it then it's up to them.

I don't think you'll things are that black and white when chaos ensues. For starters most of these police officers are standard officers - not riot officers and not some kind of special forces. They will probably receive reminder training every now and then rather than detailed riot training every year. The taxpayer can hardly afford to have every officer trained as a specialist in riot control.

Therein lies the problem. Not all degrees should be degrees - some subjects should be taught in different ways not as a degree. And, no, I'm not going to name subjects and offend anyone. The whole of higher education needs looking at, the number of degree courses lowering and alternatives increasing.

What i suspect he does know is that a degree in Technical & Stage Management should be a course at a local technical college.
