If we have lots of players - perhaps it might be worth having two divisions (random at first) and have promotion and relegation

or

two divisions and a battle of the champions

or

a world cup type format with group stages and then a knockout competition with a shield and plate type format.

or

one giant league to run with three (or so) fixtures each week
