The Burrell Arms, Haywards Heath

Ive been in the Burrell at all diffrent times of the day and Ive never had a problem with it. I think its quie a good pub for a pre/post train ride really.

Went in there a couple a montrhs back when the trains screwed up and it was as full of furrow-browed scowling inbreds as it was back then. Same slashed seats with the foam rubber hanging out it looked like too. Disgusting place.

Absolute rubbish, the decor is pretty average for a pub, the claim of slashed seats with foam rubber hanging out is an outright lie, the amount of snobbery being revealed on this thread is astonishing.

I live in the Heath and whilst it's not a great place to drink, it is miles better than BH. It's crying out for a big pub to replace The Sussex and cater for the less desirables who have drifted to the Broadway ever since. Burrell is and always will be a hole, very sad days when the Livvy Arms closed down and the Sarge changed to a food pub.

Lindfield not as good as it used to be either, hardly ever see the Red Lion or Standup (Linden Tree) mobbed like they always used to be.

loved Liverpool arms. used it all time when Jim munt had it and the DJ. maybe even drank with you!!

Do you mean the Lord Clyde? A pub I haven't been to since about a dozen NF supporters surrounded my mates and me during a lunchtime session in 1983. Bradford is a city full of decent pubs; I can't remember why we decided to go to one of the dives in the place but it was a bad decision.

Yes, but Burgess Hill has ONE pub in the town centre. Its the deadest town centre I've ever known.

Haywards Heath is MILES better than Burgess Hill.

It's nice to see that the old HH vs BH rivalry has not died!!

I grew up in HH and of course, HH was far better than BH in my day - anyone from BH had 2 heads and shagged their sister!! As a result, we never went drinking there. I seem to remember that it was the Top House that had the bad reputation in those days.

The HH pubs that were OK were the Sarge and the Star. The Burrell was always a hole. If you wanted a fight, you would go to the Burrell, the Heath or the Golden Eagle. But then the Golden Eagle was in the dodgy end of HH where everyone had 2 heads and shagged their sister!!
Most people I knew went to the Linden Tree or the Red Lion in Lindfield, the Kings Head in Cuckfield or the Sarge/Star.

The highlight of my youth was the opening of the Dolphin Leisure Centre which had a pool table and a video game machine (Space Invaders, Asteroids, Defender or Missile Command) plus disabled ramps that were good for skateboarding!! The cinema closed down when I was very young. The Broadway then was shops mainly - not a trendy bar in sight. There was a newsagent that was a good place to get underage cigs, a sports shop and a furniture store (Hiltons??).

Like most towns though, there wasn't much in either BH or HH for teenagers to do. But there is nothing wrong with them if you want a sleepy, safe environment to bring up kids with half decent schools.

Cor that takes me back, I remember getting (breaking) into the cinema after it had closed down searching for porno mags that the resident tramp left there, I'm right in saying the bus station was next door where the 7-11/Quickstop is now ?.

Not that I remember - the bus station was on the other side of the road opposite where the 7/11 is. The cinema was roughly where the 7/11 is but slightly further down the road nearer the shops on Commercial Square.

I have not been there for a long time, but from what I remember, the bus station building was still there but had shops or offices in it. Was an odd looking building.

The notion of a rivalry between Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill is the equivalent of choosing between an evening watching Songs of Praise on repeat while Norman Lamont provides a running commentary and an afternoon picking dried paint out of drains with a key to a soundtrack of Katie Melua, Manic Street Preachers and Keane as interpreted by David Ford. They're a dual-pronged testimony to the real dangers of psychogeography - everyone I've ever met from there seems to have their personality forged in mid-Sussex hues of arse-clenching boredom.

I wandered up there at lunchtime today as I fancied a cold frothy one. I didn't know it was under repair. The place does indeed look like its being gutted - either that or its been bombed. All the hanging baskets were STREWN across the path, the benches were piled up, and on peering through the windows, it looked as though half the ceiling had collapsed onto the bar. A bored looking bloke in overalls was scraping paint off the windowframes. I'd assume if its being refurbished it'll be ready for the World Cup kickoff next Friday ? Pretty stupid time to close it down otherwise.

I ended up joining the ponces and having a couple of Senorita-Beaters outside Evo. They're going to start charging for the sunshine there, you know.

the rivalry between HH and BH died one day when we played palace away, arriving at East Croydon, the train was bricked.Both HH and BH lads jumped off the train together and across the tracks to chase the scum away...and if it was a pub fight you wanted "the Sussex" in HH was the place

the potters is decent since its refit a few years back. railway is good for grub and live music, the windmill and kings head are decent for beer gardens and, although more of a bar, mooch does one of the best burgers in the world

The landlord in the Potters is a top bloke, I was in there over the weekend and heard he has also bought the Top House, doing it up nice and proper.

Quench is a decent bar as well, a bit more class than the meat markets and chav caverns of the Haywards Heath Broadway strip.

What makes me laugh is the snobbery against Haywards Heath, It used to be the other way around. Still is for a lot of us!

I have been known to have the odd point in the Buzza before home games.

I tend to drink in the Wine Bars (which everyone seems to hate on here) I have a fair few work friends who come down to the place because, strangely, they like it!

We do have a shortage of pubs. When a 6th former, we used to start off in The Liverpool and walk up to the Serge.
