Shocking standard of spelling on Northstandchat

The problem with this is that not everybody is blessed with the same levels of ability spelling wise. Have you ever stopped to consider that perhaps some people can't help it? Your attitude would have prevented you from reading Einstein for example (unlikely to post here I'll admit). Would that be a smart move?

I'm pretty sure that all the people who post barely-intelligible messages on forums aren't dyslexic, otherwise dyslexia would have to be more widespread than sex.

It's a fair point you make, of course, but it doesn't really apply to the sort of things that bother me. Spelling mistakes I can live with, but complete ignorance about how to put a sentence together is just sloppy. I remember being taught that stuff at primary school, and I didn't get a particularly special education (unless you count St Mary Magdalen's RC Primary School as somehow special, in which case I'm very concerned!)

There shouldn't be a full point after "Dr". Full points represent subsequent missing letters. "Doctor" has no letters after the "r".

Common spelling mistakes i always see...

Suprise ... It's suRprised

Loose ... No it's LOSE. As in, I hope my team doesn't lose.

Seen many, many other mistakes but fail to remember them. I try and put these bad visions out of my head.

However when raise these issues with anyone they go mad. You would think that they would be happy to get free tuition and be corrected for free.

We all make mistakes but generally don't you like to do things properly ? If you don't give a shit and as a consequence continually get things wrong, fair enough. But it would be a bit much if you then expect me to employ you, befriend you or read your posts.

Is anyone else shitting themselves about making a basic mistake in this thread? I've read every post I've made about five times before I've actually posted it.

The grammar/spelling issue is not confined to NSC. I work with children and youths and I'm often surprised by their lack of a grasp on basic sentence construction. Capital letters are a dying species, commas extinct and spelling dying on it's arse. Schooling, modern communication and attitudes towards learning are all aspects of this. I'm not sure I'm that bothered to find it annoying, but I do find it dismaying that some people are quite content with their inability to communicate in reasonable English. I don't mind the grammar police and I don't think it's necessarily a sign of a lost argument, a little reminder here in there does not hurt.

I ignore most errors, generally. I reluctantly accept that the English are lazy when it comes to writing and speaking their own language. However, if I'm insulted and the person in question has done so with a word spelt wrong or the grammar is incorrect, I will say something. Saying 'your an idiot' to me is likely to get a reaction.

As a fully paid up member of the spelling / grammar police, my reasoning is that I tend to not really listen to somebody's point if it looks like it was written by a 6 year old child with learning difficulties. I don't see what's wrong with that, if a post looks like it was written by someone unintelligent then I take less notice of their opinion, as I assume the poster is unintelligent. You'll find the same happens in real life as well!

I'm not talking about the odd typo, and as BOF says, it's easy to put the odd 'there' in when you know perfectly well what the correct one should be. But when someone's post is littered with basic spelling and grammatical errors I tend to ignore their opinion. It really shouldn't be too much to ask to speak / write your first language to a reasonable standard.

An I really fail to see how so many people can get 'your' and 'you're' mixed up. It's not rocket science, I learnt that when I was six!

I agree, most web browsers come with a spell checker. It seems to have become acceptable for the English to be lazy with basic spelling. My ex is from Slovakia, she has a better grasp of the English language, both written and spoken, than most people I know. If I read her CV against one that had incorrect spelling, punctuation and grammar, I know who I would pick.

Having said that, this is a football forum, not a language school, so each to their own.

I agree that it is in no way confined to NSC.

I think the backlash against poor spelling and grammar is justified, and comes from a certain sense of frustration and incredulity that the drop in basic standards seems to have happened within one generation. Assuming that's the case, it shouldn't be blamed on the kids (or rather the majority of the blame shouldn't go to the children) if they're receiving a poor education.

My partner runs her own school, and their method of teaching spelling and sentence construction is brilliant; the kids start this at three years old. I couldn't explain it here - but it's one which involves phonetics, logic and a spot of trial and error.
