Didn't allende commit suicide?

I always thought he was shot down fleeing to Cuba in a plane but in the telegraph pinochet obituary it said probable suicide.

Just a bit confuddled.

No mention of yanks bombing districts, but I did read about Cuban backed thugs harrasing people and Allende ignoring the Constitutional court. Must get links..
