What lead to the coup was an alliance between foreign capital and vested interest in Chile to oppose the democratic will of the Chilean people. One of the first acts in the lead up to the coup was the murder of the head of Chile's armed forces by Pinochet's clique of traitors, assisted by that arch war criminal Henry Kissinger.

Very doubtful given his arrogant autocratic style. Oh and they weren't traitors as Allende was being back by foreign insurgents.
