I was brought up in the 50s and 60s. I got the ruler once at school and never misbehaved in school again. (I was hit on the back of the hand with a ruler and I wasn't the only one.) I got a smack from my parents if I was too cheeky or too forward and learnt to respect their rules and boundaries. I was taught to respect authority and always felt that authority was there to help me, not to hinder me.

im not old or your son, but by the way your idiotic points about me sitting in my armchair moaning about the police in one case of brutality which this was, i have not once praised these dick heads destroying our streets and i never will, but like i have said i wont stand for mindless violence from either side.

To be totally honest if he had smashed something up of mine I'd probably think "you deserved that" for a bit, but then I'd reflect.

Problem with the look of that one is that it doesn't exactly look like something done in "heat of the battle".

To be honest though, I'm sure part of the reason it's very quiet in South West London this evening is that it:

1) Kids have had a little time to absorb the negative reaction, hopefully from a few within their peer group.

2) They chickened out doing it again, because there was a good chance they would get hurt by a policeman or more likely a member of the general public.

Unfortunately the threat of personal injury was probably the quickest way to snuff this out.

Very very sad. The priority would appear to be to try and teach these kids that not getting twatted by a copper was only one of the reasons they should loot Foot Locker.

It seems i'm mostly surrounded by the sorts of people who'd pick out their favourite pitchforks to wield in the direction of the nearest paediatrician.
Ideally we're looking for a justice based on the system we felt was hideously shaken by these sudden violent outbreaks of the past week. That system does not include battering the shit out of someone, criminal or not, who stands unaggressively still when the police approach. Such action doesn't clean the streets, but reddens them bloodily. The have to be firm, of course, the rozzas, but justice mustn't be delivered personally by one angry cop who can take no more. That's a Bronsonism and has no place in the modern society we are supposed to be looking to reform.
