Yes ...Director of Football ....is more than Director of Youth development ....Has done brilliant as the latter but little evidence of the alround role of the former
Of course you haven't got evidence. That's probably because you aren't there with him on the regular meetings with the management, and the board of directors, and the players, and when he goes on scouting missions, and liaising with the various levels of coaching (first team, reserves, youth) etc.

He is probably the hardest working person at the club.

If thats true then good on him.... but the club is not finding the players it requires and so as director of football he is failing in that aspect of his job.....

What on earth are you talking about? You might not have been on Mars or Uranus but you clearly haven't been following the Albion either.

Sidwell actually played for us: we tried to sign him permanently and matched Reading's offer but he, understandably, preferred to play in a modern stadium rather than a converted athletics stadium. Blackstock also refused to come here. What are the club meant to do - kidnap players?

McGhee has been trying to get a left-back since the summer. You don't find them down Tescos - they have to be persuaded that this is the right place to come. And we're not going to find it easy to compete with our bigger rivals.

And it beggars belief that you can slag off Hinshelwood. He might have been a crap manager but he's worked wonders on the youth team and it's his development of the likes of Harding and Virgo (and Hinsh and Hammond) that's kept this club afloat.

The Sidwell saga is a prime example of our club's inability to be PROACTIVE in the transfer market... it was clear within a very few games of his joining us on loan that he was an exceptional player... and yet we sat on his loan, did nothing... only REACTED to Reading's bid for his services on a perm basis... too little, too late... would have been a fantatsic investment... what is he worth now?... 1M, 2M?...

Yep thats true. Only when Reading sniffed around did we then match their bid.

But the fact is we could have got Sidwell by moving in before reading and then made mega bucks by selling him on a la Currie.

He was ours to take but we twiddled our thumbs.

Snap!...

I think it was more a case of being caught on the hop. Brighton were looking to extend his loan, which would have been better financially and Arsenal were willing. That's when Reading came piling in, and Brighton had to react. All rather unfortunate.

I'd still prefer to blame Reading than us for that situation.

We had already signed him until the end of the season, then Reading came sniffing and it all went from there.

Let's not miss out on some half decent players in this transfer window who will keep us in the Championship. If we haven't any money, the answer is simple..............borrow some. And be quick about it!

Then you are seeing Brighton's performance in the transfer market through rose-tinted spectacles, IMHO... Sidwell is a player we should have QUICKLY tried to sign on a perm basis... at worst, it would have been a fantastic investment a la BZ...

That can't be right, surely... irrelevant anyway... we should have been more proactive...

Was that the case? Shit, didn't realise that. Bloody Reading bastards.

Sadly yes. The problem was we could have gone after him before Reading came on the scene, but we reacted to their offer. It was cheaper if he was on loan to us, as no fee was payable.

Regarding Hinshlewood, I remember meeting him at a Seagulls over London meeting many moons ago and he came over as somebody he knew the game, was passionate (as an ex Palace player can be) about the Albion and wanted to turn our youth development into the best around. The number of park games and the like they went to on the look out for players was amazing.

I have to it was partly due to the work he was doing here that I was gutted when he became manager as it meant this might drop off and that if the managerial gig went wrong we might have to sack him. Luckily for all concerned a solution was found.
