Haven't played this in years. Isn’t the b-side called Gabriel's Wings? It's got quite Christmassy lyrics, I recall. Sort of. "You were born under a shiny star". Actually, could be nothing to do with Xmas.

I see where you're coming from there. Funnily enough, I've got Lovers Not Fighters but had never noticed that before. Then again, I hve a strange relationship with MW.

I think we may have started the Xmas songs too early. There have been a few welcome discoveries though - I only had the Sally Shapiro version of Anorak Christmas and had never looked up the original.

Hey, I've got some crackers to come. Saving them up for nearer Christmas Day.
Music in cars is a complex subject, as a lot of it depends on context. If you're driving over the Pennines at night there's nothing better than the first Sisters of Mercy album. If you're driving through Manchester in the snow you need Joy Division. If you're driving through Manchester in the rain you need The Chameleons. If you're driving through leafy Shropshire on a hazy summer day you need Nick Drake etc.
There's definitely music which doesn't work in cars though. Much as I like the Wedding Present, for example, I've never found them to be good driving music. Maybe they're just too frenetic?

Volume comes into it - if you whack the volume up, the music is a lot more understandable, but driving becomes more dangerous. For me, the breaking point is when I can't tell what's going on in the song - eg I can't make out the bassline, or even what key the song is in. I'd play A Million Miles in the car, but Getting Nowhere Fast would fall flat.

As with Manchester, it's horses for courses. Brighton bands for Brighton - Shrag, Go! Team, Pipettes, British Sea Power, Leo Sayer...Bands that remind me of when I last lived in Brighton are most of those, plus New Pornographers and School of Seven Bells.
