Doubt any of you will remember but a while back I was on here making noises about building myself a bike.. well I've just bought myself the frame for it! Don't know if any of you are interested in watching me build it up or not but if you are I will continue to post my progress. Attached is a few photos of the frame as it is, I'm going to strip it down and re paint it. Any suggestions on colour? Cheers View attachment 37265View attachment 37266View attachment 37267
Come on Z you must know enough about us all by now, to know we will be all over this.

I too am trying to find the right frame (for the right price) to do much the same.
But as yet it seems my tastes for a classic European frame is beyond my budget.

I've go no colour suggestions, but will follow your work with interest. If you were happy to, I'd also be interested to follow your expenditure on the project. Cost of the frame, then parts, paints etc. and then the man hours! Would love to build myself a winter/training bike by doing this.

I'd suggest white, with black lettering and detailing, with some red-to-yellow flashes. I reckon that'd look awesome.

I kitted out my current 'hack' for about £150, using Ebay and the classifieds on cycling forums, mainly Bikeradar.
I also recently popped into a local car restoration place and they'd do a straight forward respray for around £50.

The frame cost me £20. I'll keep you all updated, I'm picking it up from Brighton tonight / tomorrow. Think I'm going to make it into a fixed gear / single speed bike on a flip flop hub. If anyone has any single speed bits kicking about in the shed let me know I'd be interesting in buying some bits!

Add me to that list. DON'T DO IT!!! There are plenty of SS bikes out there already, and plenty of shit conversions. Restore it to it's former glory and own something truely special. Don't be a rapist.

this is aimed at any wheel experts out there...

Next Spring I will be looking to upgrade my wheels from the Miche set that came with the bike. I will probably budget up to £600 and would like to get the best return in terms of actually 'feeling' a difference.
I weigh under 10 stone, so wont be too hard on them, but at the same time, don't want anything too fragile.
something that feels good to climb on, but also makes me feel like a king when accelerating. Asking too much?!

Rest assured i will be spending months researching (procrastinating), as I seem to do with every component or clothing purchase, before splashing out, but I just wondered if there were any personal recommendations...

Oh and i'm running Campagnolo, so Shimano is obviously out.

You can't turn a beautiful classic European frame into a goddamn single speed. That's like buying a Ferrari 250 TS and sticking an automatic box in it.

Sacrilege!

I bet you weren't expecting this zfleas from the mild mannered Geeks.

Bizarrely enough I'm probably your closest friend on this issue, on here.
Even though I'd never ever do such an incredibly stooopid thing, myself, I'm not perturbed by those that do.
After all it is another near dead bike, back on the road.

(oh and I doubt it's over yet, Indurain's Lungs and Glanders are yet to wade in, either, good luck)

From memory £600 will get you either a set of good (very good if you can find a good sale) aluminum wheels or a reasonable(ish) carbon wheelset.

Personally, given the roads (both in the UK and Christchurch) I'd be more inclined to go with a decent set of aluminum. Or if you're feeling brave there are a couple of specialised wheel builders in Brighton (can't remember any off the top of my head) but they may be able to build you something better for your money (or more personalised at the very least).

Thanks for the advice. Kind of confirms my thoughts so far in terms of going aluminium.
It's exactly what I did with my bike - going for the absolute best specced aluminium I could afford, rather than spending an extra hundred quid on a low specced carbon.

sticking with the current set-up for winter, so plenty of time to obsess over it and look for sales.

Bloody right we are! Post away and good luck with the project. Each to their own but a fixie seems a bit of a shame.

I expect you already know all about it, but just in case...BikeRadar.com View forum - Road parts...always seems to be wheels right across the price range up for sale on there.

Pantani's mantra is always to upgrade wheels above anything else on a bike so with a bit of luck he might well be along with some good recommendations for you.

I'm pretty relaxed over it. For all the modern idiots on fixies, there is an old tradition of time trialling on a fixed wheel.

£600 should get you a decent set of wheels - certainly something where you'll feel the difference.

Not sure on specifics but it'll depend on standard of roads and how lumpy the terrain is. A rear disc feels fantastic but not in this case!

Thanks for the input everyone, appreciate the fact that everyone is interested! The reason I wanted a fixed gear bike is because I currently have a specialized allez which I use for exercise at the weekends and getting to work on, and i wanted a normal push bike with no clips to get to town and shops etc, and for a bit of fun. Granted my bike is fun, but variety is nice. If anyone has any recommendations as to what you think I should do pleas let me know!
Sorry if I've repeated anything or talked crap I've just got back from the pub
Peace
