Campaign to Slow Down the Singing of GOSBTS.

The answer my friends is ....

a trumpet or bugler to keep time. Even a drum [gosh what am I saying] could do the job.

have you not seen our fans in action?

even when the PA at a stadium is playing Hey Jude, Carnival de Paris etc, we STILL sing it too fast.

At Plymouth, the band were playing all the tunes and our fans still sung it faster than the band.

Impossible task!

I really like THIS verse

Far o'er the seas we wander
Wide through the world we roam,
Far from the kind hearts yonder
Far from our dear old home,
But never shall forget my boys
And true we'll ever be
To the girls so kind that we left behind
In Sussex by the sea.

Perfect for singing after journeying to an away ground at some god-forsaken far flung hovel at the arse-end of the country.

That is the verse I love too. Very emotional. I honestly don't know of a better football song that's so personal to supporters, I really don't.

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.
I sleep all night and I work all day.

I cut down trees, I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars.

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.
I sleep all night and I work all day.

I cut down trees, I wear high heels,
Suspenders and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie,
Just like my dear Papa.

I'd bloody LOVE to be in a standful of Albion fans at an away game belting that out.
But maybe thats just me.

I think it should be given a makeover, and put to a reggae beat:

Now be de time fo' marchin'
Now let yo' hearts be gay
Hark t'de merry bugles Soundin' along our way
So's let yo' voices rin', mah' boys,
And snatch de time fum me

Oh we's goin' down and we'll win de cup
Fo' Sussex by de sea

Altogeda'

Good old Sussex by de sea,
Good old Sussex by de sea
Oh we's goin' down and
we'll win de cup Fo'
Sussex by de sea

Am I the only one that couldn't read that without singing along in my head to hear what it would sound like?

I think singing all the words and all the text would bring back some good memories for older supporters and a nice new flair for younger !!!

Perhaps we need an extended play club mix version which takes ages to get going hints at the hook line and beat but then springs into main melody with verve and aplomb?

It's too much to remember all the verses, son I've cut and pasted my favourite bits to make one verse before the standard 'altogether now' chorus.

Far o'er the seas we wander
Wide through the world we roam,
Far from the kind hearts yonder
Far from our dear old home,
And when you go from Sussex,
Whoever you may be,
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the sea.

Altogether now...

I think that would be a pretty decent intro into a stadium enveloping chorus. Plus it's inclusive of us fans who've left Sussex and England.

A suggestion, if I may, with your permission, Mr Straw? I think, given his user name, even those of us who don't know what Jack Straw looks like (which can't be too many of us) would be able to identify him. So those of us who want the anthem slowing down should, at the next game at which there's a terrace or unreserved seating, merely ensure we're all more or less in the same section of the terrace as Mr Straw, and sing accordingly. It only takes enough voices singing enough times and it'll slow itself down.

I quite like that idea.

Takin the 'best bits' from each verse, stick them together and off you go. It will impossible for most of us to learn more than one verse anyway.

How about letting a smaller group (or everyone singing quietly) start with a nice steady...

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way

then everyone joins in getting louder...

So let your voices ring, my boys,
And take the time from me
And I'll sing you a song, as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.

Altogether nowwwwwwww

and then it goes mental!!!

Good old Sussex by the sea,
Good old Sussex by the sea
And we're going up to win the cup
For Sussex by the sea

and repeat and fade......

of the ideas mooted so far, THIS is the one I would back as good and achievable - any means of avoiding GdOlSusBarzee for the last bit?

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
There are about 60 of us so far signed up for this.
On Saturday, sing low, sing slow.
Should anyone within ear shot go off like a gibbon on speed, just shout "Slower", and give them a hard stare, and of course, carry on singing at the right speed.
I have a feeling that we might be turning the corner here at last.
If us 60, plus whoever else, from now on, only sing low and slow, this should take off, no problem.
I'm looking forwards to Saturday to see how we do on this.
We must not give up.
