Andrew Rawnsley: Cameron or Brown - who will end up with a Crewe cut? | Comment is free | The Observer

The Labour campaign is worse. It is, in fact, a disgrace. What was once regarded as the cleverest electioneering operation in the democratic world has descended into a crude parody of the silliest and nastiest aspects of political campaigning. Labour activists dressed in toppers and tails stalk the Tory candidate to attack him as a 'toff' because his family built up a successful chain of shoe repairers. It's not Edward Timpson who is made to look like the nob by these puerile games.

When not playing the class card in a juvenile way, Labour has been playing the race card in a poisonous way. The BNP is not standing in the seat, but you could be forgiven for thinking that you were looking at their stuff when you read some of Labour's campaign material. One Labour leaflet invites a vote against the Tories on the grounds that they 'oppose making foreign nationals carry an ID card'. The Tories actually oppose making anyone carry an ID card. Labour should be ashamed of stooping to xenophobia to try to cling on to the seat. They are getting this down and dirty because so much is at stake here, especially for the Prime Minister.

Erm...I last voted Labour in a General Election in 1997. If you can't work out my politics that's your problem, not mine.

Do you commute? Use the train for work? Annoying tho it is, the rail network shuts down every weekend because there's money being pumped into it bigtime to make it fit for purpose. Under the Tories, it got starved of funds.

I'd like to know where this money's going then because other than the new east london line i'm not seeing any benefits to the normal commuters!

Upgrading the West Coast Mainline, a process that will involve a complete rebuild of Birmingham New Street Station and has already led to improvements at various other places on the line to help increase capacity.

Billions spent so far and 10 minutes knocked of the journey time from London to Birmingham

To be fair though, we will be hard pressed to knock journey times down without straight line routes, and it's too late for that now.

Think they are making improvements at lots of different places on the line, it will all add up...eventually!

As someone else pointed out, it is difficult to make massive gains unless you straighten tracks or build completely from new...might have been possible in the 1850's but not that easy in the 21st Century.

And if you vote BNP, sorry, but you are a moron. How come successive waves of immigrants can come here and make a go of it? Cos they put in the graft. Brighton's New England Quarter is being built by healthy, hard-working Poles while the natural-born ferals scuttle about down in London Road, thieving out of Poundstretcher. OK, bit of a generalisation, but not all that much. To get back to my original point: if you vote BNP, sorry, but you are a moron. No offence

very much a generalisation, and it seems you are a typical self righteous lefty from that ridiculous post.

what about the immigrants that come here and scrounge off the state, stay unemployed, claim countless benefits for themselves and their many offspring, whilst gang warfare in london and other big cities dominates the front pages every week, as the hard working englishmen go out every day to earn an honest salary?!

if someone were to make the generalisation above there would be outrage from all these people that choose to take the minorities side and go over the top with the seemingly fashionable "political correctness"..

Short sighted decisions haven't helped us either..

I.e: Shutting Lewes to Uckfield line, which could act as a far better diversionary route when Brighton main line is shut and would be FAR more reliable than buses from Three Bridges.

Another example of this was closing a station on the South London Line at East Brixton in the mid '70s. Now the area, and South London in particular, is crying out for more stations to improve its infrastructure in comparison to North London's far superior rapid transport(in the form of the tube). Now it would cost millions to rebuild the station because it was on a viaduct, so Network Rail keep baulking at the idea even though it would be really useful to have SLL interchange in Brixton.

I hardly mentioned an opinion on Labour losing control. I mentioned my worries about the Tories gaining power.

And I wasn't calling Tory voters naive - that's another debate. I was calling YOU naive.

You Can't Have It Both Ways. If There's Sod All To Separate Labour From The Tories Then Why Were You So Gutted? Mind You, Your Arty-Farty Festivals Are Still Going On, Brighton's As Full Of Ex-London Wankers As Ever So It Can't Be That Bad.

And You Did Rant About People In The Burbs As If They Were Scummy Proles. I Wish I Could Find The Article. It Really Shows What You And THPP And All You Others Think Of Those Of Us Who Just Refuse To Vote The Way You Want.

I'm talking about the difference between Labour and the Tories nationally (very little), and Labour and the Tories locally (depending on where you are, could be very little, could be massive). The main thing that concerned me was that the Tories were going to try and slash the prices of car parking in the city - which would have been a complete disaster.

My comment about the Tories in the suburbs was that I felt that there is a difference culturally between those who live in central Brighton and those who live in say, Woodingdean and Patcham (I'm vastly generalising here - but it is reflected in the voting patterns), and that is reflected in the fact that the Greens are in total control of central Brighton, with the anathema of having the Tories being in control of the city. That's all.

And what is your issue with 'arty-farty' festivals? The one that has had cross-party support ever since its inception since 1966? It was started under a Tory Council you know. And what is your issue with 'ex-London wankers'? I know what mine might be, so what is yours? In fact, I have no idea what you're trying to say. And, I suspect, nor do you.

You know, you really do talk shite sometimes, especially when you think you can tell me what I am thinking politically.

Obviously.

How Do You Make That Leap Then?

Perhaps You Can't Read Properly. Who Plotted The Graph? I Bet You Any Money You Like That Labour MPs And Activists Would Not Put Themselves There Neither Would Tories Place Themselves So Far To The Right Economically.

And What Kind Of Wally Plots The Tories Who Oppose ID Cards And Support The Concept Of Double Jeopardy To Be More Authoritarian Than Labour Who Want ID Cards And Want To Throw Out The Idea Of Universal Right To Trial By Jury And Also Talked About Removing The Protection of Double Jeopardy?

This Government Has Brought In More Laws Than Any Other And Yet Are Less Authoritarian? What A Crock Of Shit.

Yes. We Have A Bigger Public Sector Than Ever Before, We Have A Government Absolutely Committed To Tax And Spend Policies And We Have A Government Determined To Regulate Business And The Electorate Into Submission.

Funny How In That Recent General Election Poll The Tories Came Out Streets Ahead Yet You Lefties Are The Noisiest On This Board When It Comes To Politics. You Got The London Elections Wrong, Your Views Are Not Representative Of This Board Let Alone The Country So Quite Frankly What Makes You Think You're So Right And Everybody Else Is Wrong?

I'm No Fan Of The Tories, Lib Dems or Greens But Am Sick To The Back Teeth Of Lefties Moaning About This Government. You Voted For It. It's Full Of People Claiming To Be Socialists, It's Clueless About The Economy, It's Clueless About World Affairs, It's Clueless About How To Make This Country Safer, Cleaner, Fairer.

And Then You Get Twats Like THPP Who Absolutely Refuse To Acknowledge His Party Are Full Of Shits. "Oh, Never Mind Them Playing The Race Card. At Least They're Not Like Those Nasty Toff Tories Blah Blah Blah." And Woe Betide Anyone Who Says They Are Considering Rejecting The Current System In Favour Of A Party Like The BNP Which Might Want To Engage In Discussing The Fears And Concerns Of The British Working Class. Oh No. We're Supposed To Be Good Little Puppies And Do What Uncle Tom Says And Vote For Labour Because Apparently They Care. What Patronising Bollocks.

Thanks for such an angry reply to my replies to your original posts. I can read properly thank you very much. I just posted the link to the Political Compass so you may be able to see who made that graph, that was all.
Where do you get the idea that we have a bigger public sector than ever before? How do you think that those 26 million records were lost recently? It's because the HRMC was created out of a merger from the Inland Revenue and Customs, they then cutback on the internal post system and contracted it out to TNT, a private company. Then TNT lost the disks when they were sent via them.
Hardly the work of socialists?

Labour don't play the race card. They're warning of right-wing parties playing the race card. Different thing completely.

and i bet you come from a nice white middle class area dont you mate , if you had actually come from and felt so alienated in the area you were born that you were forced to move out to escape the crime and filthy habits of some of these nice fluffy hard working immigrants then i guarantee you would feel differently about the bnp, i happen to not think they are sufficiently competent to govern but dont dismiss people making a protest vote as morons
