Is there any chance of us playing France at any point? I'm sure Mbappe and Griezmann against Phillips and Coady is a dual to whet the lips of any neutral fan.

If you win the group you will play the second placed team in group F (Germany, France, Portugal, Hungary), so yes there is a significant chance.

My thinking is our defense is the weakest part of the team so it seemed sensible to give them as much help as possible - Shaw and Maguire play week in and week out at united and likewise Stones and Walker at man city and Stones and Mauire have played plenty of times together for England so at least they won't have to worry about building partnerships.

The Chuckle Brothers were a partnership. The Three Stooges were a partnership. Delboy and Rodney were a partnership.

Southgate says the six players not selected will be involved in the two warm up games.
if I was white I would tell him to do one, or Hope he plays and has a great game and scores a worldy

If there is a bias at all?

Well, taking my blue and white striped specs off, I've heard independent pundits (ex internationals and broadsheet writers such as Rory Smith) talk this calendar year about Dunk on R5 and TS.

It crops up repeatedly "Unfortunately for Lewis, he plays for an unfashionable club. He would have better chances playing elsewhere".

In the same discussions, Villa and Everton are often mentioned favourably .... regarding GS's choices.

Why would making his England debut be pointless?

What could be more pointless than playing in a friendly in a build-up to a tournament he won't be at?

Much better for the player to rest up and prepare for next season. I'm sure Lewis Dunk cherishes his one England cap, but for the rest of us it's a f**king insult.

But pointless.

Not really pointless, a good performance from White in the friendlies will show that he can hang at international level and should be considered for the World Cup qualifiers in September, so it's still an important game for White, a real chance to show what he can do and that Southgate was wrong to leave him out. Plus with question marks still hanging over Maguire's fitness there is still a slim chance he could get the call up to the Euros as changes are allowed up to our first game.

I don't necessarily agree.

Butcher, Campbell, Ferdinand and Terry played for England sometimes with (Cole, Neville), sometimes without a club colleague.

Their class shone through regardless.

I'm not "England negative" far from it. I will love the Euros and absolutely get behind the effort. But for now, from a subjective, opinion-based footy discussion, I am critical of Southgate and his approach to his squad selection in the context of the most realistic chance of doing well, (Home advantage for some games) since 1996.. The thoughts of Tyrone Mings being integral to that is vexing to me.. relying on players who have had bad injuries, not been fit enough to play in their Club's biggest games over the last week or so is also vexing!
I hope it pays off, I really do, and it might because in Mount, Foden and yes, Grealish, we have young players who are exceptional at creating moments in games and not burdened by previous tournament heartache.. but Grealish also fits the bill of "not 100% up to speed".

Is it not OK to think Southgate’s a bit useless then?

He has some decent players to pick from, he doesn’t pick all of them and clearly has favourites. Form seems to count for nothing.

I think he’s really shite manager but yes of course I’ll be hoping we do well but if we do it will be in spite of rather than because of him imo.

That run to the semis brought him way more credit than he actually deserved imo. We were useless, not just not very good, once we met decent teams with managers with nous.

All imo of course, let him prove me wrong and win the Euros but don’t tell me to blindly wave a flag and swallow the hype. Did I mention I don’t rate him? But yes, of course, Come On England!!

Nobody rated him before he took the job. I don’t particularly rate him myself. But he’s done really well overall. All opinions but again some are OTT and forgetting the results.

Glad Ben will get the chance to play in these next 2 friendlies.

No hype here, quarters is success according to the majority even on here (incredibly negative and harsh on England), yet go out in the 1/4s and this place will be a wash with rubbish of course. Just want to support the team - so the last line you’ve written is of course the most important - we didn’t give up at Hereford and those seasons we were proper shite did we!

Love international Summer tournos and this one will be great to watch.

.

That's the key point.

I don't think any of our defense are that good so if we can give them any help we should. Shaw's had a decent season. I agree in that I think Chilwell is better but I don't think he's so much better that it overrides the understanding that Maguire and Shaw will have developed over the past couple of years.

But… surely Southgate should be using these friendlies for.. players going to the tournament?
