People say the same about cars.

Maybe so but you don't tend to premeditate killing a lot of people with a car (suicide bombers excepted).

You can legally own a car in this country, you can't legally own a gun here under normal circumstances. In the US not everybody can legally own a gun but it's a whole lot easier to get hold of one.

There is no body like the NRA advocating gun ownership either.

You're missing the point. Anything that kills people can be banned.

People are the problem not the method.

The people are the problem, but not the only problem.

Dynamite is not for sale for obvious reasons, yet guns are readily available to the public in America. Weapons that can be used in such a way i.e. a killing spree, must face stricter controls.

Can we ban the USA then:D

Why the Yank bashing. We had Dunblane and a school in Birmingham where a bloke went mad with a machete.

How many people were killled in Iraq today

From Reuters:

ISHAQI - A suicide car bomber targeting a police directorate killed nine people and wounded 10 others in Ishaqi, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad. Ten cars were destroyed.

* BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed a U.S. soldier on patrol in southwestern Baghdad, the U.S. military said. One other soldier was wounded. A roadside bomb also killed a U.S. soldier and wounded another in southern Baghdad.

10 Deaths.

I guess the US leads in todays death stakes.

My point was on banning anything that kills people. As the USA are responsible for quite a lot of deaths around the world. I would like it to be banned :D

We had Dunblane, the result of which was Parliament banning hand guns, incidents like that in the UK are mercifully rare. There is a massive difference between the mentality of the British and the citizens of the US and their attitude to firearms.

In the United States they have a right wing administration who pander to the National Rifle Association and maintaining the rights of their citizens to bear arms. The last Democratic administration banned automatic weapons, the current one allowed that ban to lapse without re-inforcing it.

There will be shock at what has happened today but sadly little will change, it will happen again, and again and again.

Bit of an embarrassing f***-up by police and university authorities - two shot dead at the dormitory, but all students were allowed and encouraged to continue as normal to class because it was thought the killer had fled the campus. Two hours later, and still on the loose, he shoots dead another 30. :nono:

Yes it's the people but you can't safely stop the wrong people getting the guns.

Taking away the option for people to use guns is a practical solution as they are only used to shoot things. Therefore the only loss would be less things getting shot.

Not so with things whose main practical use isn't to kill but that could kill someone.

There's gun 'control' in this country but how many youngsters have been shot in the last couple of months in London? OK, so they weren't all in one day.

You can never 100% stop people carrying out illegal activities.

However, I would bet that our gun 'control' is far more effective at stopping gun related deaths than America's.

I would agree with that, we live in a society where carrying a gun is not seen as normal, unless you are a farmer or in the military and do it for a reason.

Most of the kids killed in London have been victims of knife crime, something our "unarmed" police have been trying hard to reduce, I am sure that the instances (percentage) of assualts with a lethal weapon are far lower in the UK than the US.

Anyone else see that idiotic american politician on Newsnight ? It was put to him that in light of the number of school shootings in recent years, perhaps there should be a tightening on gun laws in America...his response ?

"I disagree. If the students had been armed today, they'd have been more able to defend themselves..."

:shootself

Yeee HAAW boys, lets have ourselves an old-style OK Coral SHOOTOUT y'all.
f***ing dickhead Yanks think they're living in a perpetual western. Anyone who thinks they have a RIGHT to keep a deadly firearm has got something seriously wrong in their head.
